DNA Replication. Occurs prior to cell division. (mitosis and meiosis) Ensures that each daughter cell will have a complete set of DNA molecules. DNA molecules separate into 2 strands. Each strand of the DNA serves as a template for the new strand.

  1. DNA Replication

  2. Occurs prior to cell division. (mitosis and meiosis) • Ensures that each daughter cell will have a complete set of DNA molecules.

  3. DNA molecules separate into 2 strands. • Each strand of the DNA serves as a template for the new strand. • In most eukaryotic cells, DNA replication occurs at hundreds of different places.

  4. Steps of DNA Replication • 1. Enzyme (helicase) unzip a molecule of DNA. • 2. Hydrogen bonds between base pairs are broken, 2 strands unwind. • 3. Each strand serves as the template for the attachment complementary bases. • 4. DNA polymerase brings in DNA nucleotides complementary to the exposed bases.
