Historical Background • The earliest inhabitants of the region of present-day Congo were the Bambuti people. • The Congo region during the time of the first European contact, this African Iron Age culture came under great pressure with the arrival of the first Europeans, who were the Portuguese explorers. • As the Portuguese's demand for black slaves grew, the pressure on the Congo kings increased. • About 350,000 slaves were taken from the present-day Republic of the Congo. • The Republic of Congo achieved independence in 160 on June 30th, by a nationalist movement led by Patrice Lumumba.

Geography • The Democratic Republic of the Congo includes the greater part of the Congo River Basin. • One-third of the country is on the northern side and two-thirds to the southern side. • The annual average rainfall for the whole country is about 42in. • The DRC has a vast central plateau covered by tropical rainforest, and is surrounded by mountains in the West, plains and savanna in the South and Southwest, and grasslands in the North.

People and Culture • The people of the DRC are called Congolese. • There are more than 200 African ethnic groups including the Luba, Kongo, and Anamongo, which are some of the larger tribes. • The culture of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is a reflection of the diversity of its hundreds of ethnic groups. • Roman Catholic Christianity is the main religion of the DRC. • The people gather wild fruit, mushrooms, honey, and hunt and fish. • Their musical instruments include the xylophone, mvet, and soukous.

Religion • The main religion in the Democratic Republic of Congo is Christianity (about 96% of the population) • The denominations include Protestant (39%), Roman Catholic (50%), Orthodox (0.1%), and other Christian (7%) • Christianity in the DRC has a unique history because Christianity's presence predates the Scramble for Africa, arriving first in the Kingdom of Congo in 1491, brought by Portuguese explorers.

  6. Positive Aspects • The Democratic Republic of Congo has been through many struggles in general, and you should know that by now, but they have bounced back from many of them. • . Although their economy had been in bad shape for decades, they’re starting to recover, which is very good. • It may not be the best place to live, but it does seem interesting.
