Macbeth exemplar • In the play Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, it is demonstrated through imagery and character that women who do not conform to gender expectations are deemed to be deficient or evil. Therefore, it is shown that women who do not meet societal expectations are marginalized or ostracized.

The Kite Runner exemplar • In the novel The Kite Runner, by KhaledHosseini, it is clearly shown through the use of location and character that women are punished more severely than men for disobeying parental and societal expectations. Consequently, it is clear that women must meet a higher moral standard in order to be respected.
