  1. Sound!

  2. What is sound? • Sound is a form of energy that comes from objects that vibrate Write the definition in your journal!

  3. Vibrations • Sound is caused by different vibrations. • Vibrations can be transferred from one material to another causing that material to vibrate.

  4. How does sound travel through different materials? • Vibrations of materials causing sound can travel through solids, liquids, and gases. • They cannot travel through empty space where there are no particles of matter to vibrate.

  5. Sound travels through some material better than others • When a metal spoon is tied to a string and hit so that it vibrates, the sound can be heard through the string held to the ears better than through the air only.

  6. Speed of Vibration • A fast vibration creates a sound with a high pitch and a slow vibration creates a sound with a low pitch.

  7. Pitch • Pitch is how high or how low a sound is • For example, a man’s voice has a lower pitch than a woman’s voice, or a bird song has a higher pitch than the rumble of a heavy truck • Changing the length of the vibrating object can change pitch

  8. Pitch • A long string or wire will have a lower pitch than a short string or wire • Slow vibrations= low pitch • Fast vibrations=high pitch • Experiment with changing pitch! Click below

  9. Volume • The loudness or softness of the sound • It takes more force to produce loud sounds

  10. Volume • Volume can be changed by the strength of the vibrations and distance. • The pitch can be the same, but the volume different • Lets experiment with making different volume! Click on the picture.

  11. The sounds made by a guitar, a drum, and a tambourine are alike in that they all ______. • A. have waves that travel fastest in air. • B. have waves that produce sounds at the same pitch • C. produce sound by vibration • D. travel through empty space

  12. Which lists the correct order of sounds from the loudest to the softest • A. truck horn, bird song, drum hit • B. bird song, drum hit, truck horn • C. drum hit, bird song, truck horn • D. truck horn, drum hit, bird song

  13. Which of the following is a way to increase the volume of a sound? • A. put on headphones • B. make the object smaller • C. move away from the object • D. strike an object harder

  14. Tell how you would change the volume of your voice if speaking to a large crowd in the cafeteria.

  15. Amanda wants to tune her guitar. If she wants a higher pitch, she should • A. add more string. • B. tighten the string. • C. loosen the string. • D. strongly pluck it

  16. If you tighten the strings on a guitar the sound will ______________________. • A. become louder • B. become softer • C. become higher • D. become lower

  17. Compare the pitch of a large bass drum to the pitch of a small bongo drum. • A. The pitch of the bass drum with be lower than the pitch of the bongo drum. • B. The pitch of the bass drum with be higher than the pitch of the bongo drum. • C. The pitch of the bass drum with be softer than the pitch of the bongo drum. • D. The pitch of the bass drum with be louder than the pitch of the bongo drum.

  18. From this chart one can state that • A. the shorter the air column the higher the pitch. • B. the shorter the air column the lower the pitch. • C. the longer the air column the higher the pitch. • D. the length of the air column does not affect the pitch.
