WALT: how to tell the time in French WILF: to be able to understand ¼ past, ½ past, ¼ to and o’clock (level 2) to be able to understand all times in French (level 3) to be able to understand and begin to say the time in French (level 4) Decide on 1 WILF that you think you can achieve today and write it in your book

  2. Copy into your books e.g. 1.00 = Il est une heure une heure Il est

  3. Copy into your books e.g. 2.00 = Il est deux heures Il est heures deux

  4. Copy into your books e.g. 3.00 = Il est trois heures Il est trois heures

  5. Copy into your books Il est quatre heures

  6. How do you think you say 5.00 in French? Look back at the previous slides / your notes to help you Il est cinq heures Write it into your books.

  7. Follow the pattern and write down in French, in your book, how to say the remaining times: 6.00 7.00 8.00 9.00 10.00 11.00 12.00

  8. Now let’s move on to using the phrases ¼ past ½ past ¼ to

  9. Il est deux heures et quart ( ¼ past) Copy this phrase and example into your books: ¼ past = et quart 2.15 = Il estdeuxheures et quart

  10. Il est deux heures et demie Copy this phrase and example into your books: ½ past = et demie 2.30 = Il estdeuxheures et demie ( ½ past )

  11. Il est deux heures moins le quart (¼ to ) Copy this phrase and example into your books: ¼ to = moins le quart 1.45 = Il estdeuxheuresmoins le quart

  12. Match the phrases to the clocks. Check with the person sitting next to you. 1. Il est onze heures. 2. Il est une heure moins le quart 3. Il est neuf heures et demie 4. Il est douze heures moins cinq >> When do you use ‘moins’ and ‘et’ ? >> What do they mean in English? Write your answers in your book

  13. Write the times in French in numbers and words in your exercise books The first one has been done for you = Il est dix heures et quart 1. 10.15 2. 8.30 3. 11.45 4. 1.15 5. 4.30 6. 12.30 7. 5.45 8. 6.45

  19. moins vingt-cinq Il est deux heures NOTICE how we are now using ‘MOINS’ on this side of the clock! Copy into your book: 25 to = moins vingt-cinq e.g. 1.35 = il est deux heures moins vingt-cinq ( 25 to)

  20. moins vingt Il est deux heures Copy into your book: 20 to = moins vingt e.g. 1.40 = il est deux heures moins vingt ( 20 to)

  23. Practise the times you have just seen: Matchup the times to the French. In your exercise books write the time in numbers and the words.
