  1. Denver Public Schools Diving Into the Revised Framework LE.1 Demonstrates knowledge of, interest in, and respect for diverse students’ communities and cultures in a manner that increases equity

Content/Language Objective 1 • Participants will explain orally and in writing the intent of LE.1 and how it communicates DPS Core Values using complete sentences with the whole group by: • discussing with a partner using sentence frames • highlighting key words and creating a room chart of key words • preparing with a small group and delivering an explanation to the whole group of how LE.1 communicates the assigned DPS Core Value with a group

Content/Language Objective 2 • Participants will create and write evidence for LE.1 using details by: • reading examples from the revised Handbook LE.1 Closer Looks Section • recording ideas on the “Classroom Scenarios” graphic organizer • using the guiding questions on the “Reflection/Planning Questions for LE.1” to plan for equitable access to content for all students in an upcoming

Agenda • Examine LE.1: Demonstrates knowledge of, interest in, and respect for diverse students’ communities and cultures in a manner that increases equity. • Identify intent of LE.1 and how it communicates DPS Core Values • Describe evidence for LE.1 • Identify what LE.1 means for your lesson planning and instruction

Stand Up, Hand Up, Pair Up • Take 1 minute , Respond to the question, “What is equitable access to learning of content?” • Take 3 minutes, share your response with a partner using the sentence frame, “I think equitable access is ______ because _____________________. • We will take 5 minutes and create a room chart of your responses.

  6. Diving Into LE.1 • Take 1 minute , read through the Effective column of LE.1 and highlight three words in each descriptor that capture the essence of that descriptor (bullet). • Take 3 minutes and share the words you highlighted. Include rationale for your choices. • We will take 5 minutes and create a room chart of the key words you identified.

  7. What is the Intent of LE.1? Discuss at your table, what you see as the intent of LE.1. Why is LE.1 a part of the Framework for Effective Teaching?

  8. Intent of LE.1 • Emphasizes equal access to all content for all students. • Emphasizes the importance of teaching all students respect for cultures and others’ experiences that may be different then their own. • Emphasizes the importance of creating an environment that celebrates all students’ cultures and background experiences. • Emphasizes the importance of students connecting what they learn at school to their individual cultures and background experiences.

  9. DPS Core Values • Count off so each participant is designated a number from 1 to 5 • Form groups of five that include like numbers. • Each group is assigned the DPS Core Value corresponding to their group number. • Groups discuss how LE.1 communicates the DPS Core Value they are assigned. • Each group needs to assign a spokesperson to share their explanation with the whole group.

Communicates DPS Core Values • #1 – LE.1 Communicates expectations for teachers that ALL students can learn when they have equal access to content. • #2 – LE.1 Supports teachers in implementing high quality instruction that is connected to students’ cultures and experiences. • #3 – LE.1 Supports accountability for all teachers in providing equitable access to content for ALL students. • #4 – LE.1 Promotes collaboration of teachers in identifying students’ cultural norms. • #5 - LE.1 Supports connections between the classroom and students’ home experiences.

  11. What Are You Thinking? Take 2 minutes and discuss with others at your table • What are your initial thoughts? • Questions? • Comments?

  12. What Can Be of Evidence for LE.1? • Participants read the Handbook LE.1 Closer Look packet • Discuss with others how the examples provide evidence for LE.1. • Discuss how the examples can support equitable access to content for all students.

  13. What Can Evidence Look Like for LE.1? • Refer to Handout 2, Classroom Scenarios. • Working in groups of 3, develop an example for how evidence for LE.1 could look and sound.

  14. Applying LE.1 • Select a lesson or topic you will be teaching in an upcoming lesson. • Plan for how you will ensure equal access to the lesson content for all students. • Handout 3, Reflection and Planning Questions for LE.1, may be used to guide your planning.
