This study was entitled Perceptual Learning Styles of Students and Its Effect to their Academic Performance. The study aimed to know the Perceptual Learning Styles of Grade 12 GAS Students and its effect to their Academic Performance. It also aimed to answer the following objectives What are the Learning Styles of the students What are the Academic Performances of the students in terms of learning style and Is there a significant difference between Academic Performance of the students in terms of their learning style This was a non experimental study and descriptive comparative since the researchers wanted to know the Perceptual Learning Styles of the Grade 12 General Academic Strand Students and compare their Academic Performance when grouped according to their Learning Styles. This was done by giving them survey questionnaires. The students that were included in the study comes from the five Grade 12 General Academic Strand sections that has a total population of 232. The total calculated sample size of respondents in this study using Slovin's formula is 147 with 5 percent margin of error. Names of all the students were taken and systematic sampling technique was used to get 147 random respondents. The instrument used in gathering data is in the form of self assessment questionnaires by Victoria Chislett MSc and Alan Chapman of 2005. The questionnaire was composed of 30 statements. 10 items corresponds to each of the Learning Styles. These were given to know the Perceptual Learning Styles of Grade 12 GAS Students in Agusan Sur National High School based on Fleming's VAK Learning Style Model. Data were analysed to identify, describe and explore the different learning style preference of Grade 12 GAS students of Agusan Sur National High School and determine its effect to their academic performance. The questionnaire includes the respondent's profile such as name and their average grade during the first semester. A total of 147 self assessment questionnaires by Victoria Chislett MSc and Alan Chapman of 2005 were distributed to the selected respondents. It was composed of 30 statements where 10 of which corresponds to each of the learning style identified by Neil Fleming in his VAK Learning Style Model. The following findings were obtained based on the analysis and interpretation of data. The Perceptual Learning Style of the Grade 12 General Academic Strand are arranged in descending order as follows Visual Learning 48 , Auditory Learning 30 , Kinesthetic Learning 17 , Visual Auditory 5 . The Academic Performance of the students in terms of their Perceptual Learning Style reveals that students who performs excellently in class are mostly Visual and Auditory learners. Both Kinesthetic and Visual Auditory learners respond desirably to class. Since the calculated value 0.002 is lesser than the probability value 0.005, there is a significant difference. Therefore, the students' Perceptual Learning Style affects their Academic Performance. It is therefore concluded that Visual and Auditory are the commonly used perceptual learning style of the students. Also, only few are inclined in Kinesthetic and the combination of Visual and Auditory. In terms of Perceptual Learning Style, the students who performs outstandingly are mostly Visual and Auditory Learners. Both Kinesthetic and Visual Auditory learners respond desirably to class. The Perceptual Learning Style of the students affects their Academic Performances. Grade Retention Is A Response To Academic Problems - ebookschoice.com

Years after being retained, students have significantly lower achievement than similar students who were not retained. Many retained students never catch up to their promoted same-age peers with similarly low test scores. Whatever performance advantage retained students have over their younger, same grade peers is short-lived, as they typically fall behind these students after one or two years. Several longitudinal studies indicate that, relative to low-achieving students who are promoted to the next grade, retained students are significantly more likely to drop out of school. After accounting for socioeconomic status and prior performance, dropout rates for retained students often exceed comparable promoted students by 49% or more. This paper addresses the following questions: 1. After children's growth rates in achievement prior to retention (and other factors) are taken into account, is grade retention associated with significantly lower levels of school achievement and higher rates of school dropout? 2. Among children who are retained during the early school years, is participation in a comprehensive instructional intervention associated with improved school achievement and a lower likelihood of dropping out of school? Does this participation lead to better performance than promotion with remediation? The study sample for this paper includes students who enrolled in the public schools for at least six years (from kindergarten to ninth grade) and whose school dropout status was known by age 19. Children who have left the study or cannot be located are similar to those that remain in the sample on measures of kindergarten achievement and socioeconomic status. Information on grade retention and high school completion as of January 2019 were obtained from school records. School records provided descriptive information on children including gender, race, and name of the school in which the student is enrolled at the end of each school year. Standardized test scores in reading and math were obtained annually from the beginning of kindergarten through ninth grade. Teacher and parent surveys were used to obtain information on classroom adjustment, parent involvement, and family background. Two measures of educational attainment were used in analyzing the effects of retention. Data were collected from school records, surveys, and interviews from youth and, if necessary, their parents. Before investigating the association between grade retention and high school completion or dropout, a comprehensive set of predictors of retention was examined, including child and family background, early adjustment indicators (kindergarten and first grade academic performance and achievement), and intervening school experiences (e.g., school mobility and special education placement). In order of magnitude, the following factors increased the odds of being retained: low family income (children eligible for a subsidized lunch had twice the risk of retention than those not eligible); sex of child (boys had twice the risk of retention), and number of school moves from ages 10 to 14. The following factors decreased the odds of being retained: overage at kindergarten entry, number of years of average or better parent involvement in school, reading and math achievement in first grade, grade in reading in first grade, and math achievement in kindergarten. Findings that the number of school moves increases the risk of retention and parent involvement in school decreases the risk are relatively new, and especially significant. Variables such as race/ethnicity, parent education, years of CPC intervention, residence in a high-poverty school attendance area, and special education placement were not associated with retention. Findings indicate that grade retention-no matter when it occurs-is associated with significantly lower levels of school achievement and higher rates of school dropout. The students who were retained fell further behind their similarly low-achieving former classmates as early as kindergarten and first grade. By the end of their eighth-grade year, retained students were 1 to 2 years behind these former classmates. Retained students had a rate of school dropout that was 24% higher than that of promoted students (controlling for preretention achievement growth and other factors). Does grade retention harm students, or are the large estimated adverse effects of grade retention due at least in part to the difficulty in controlling for observed and unobserved differences between retained and promoted students that may be correlated with later educational attainment? The main strength of this study was the inclusion of a variety of preretention control variables such as achievement at different times that take account of such differences. Results indicated that, although there were substantial differences between the unadjusted and adjusted models, both indicated a significant link between grade retention and school dropout rates as well as lower rates of school completion. The finding that students who were retained in the first three grades did not benefit academically from 1 to 3 years of participation in the Child-Parent Center program suggests that retention plus remediation strategies may not prevent the typical achievement declines that have been shown for simple grade retention without remediation. Indeed, the CPC follow-on intervention is more comprehensive and longer-lasting than most remedial services that retained students receive under many current retention practices in schools. Moreover, comparable students who were promoted (instead of retained) and then participated in intervention for 1 to 3 years had substantial performance advantages over retained students who participated in the intervention. Grade retention is a response to academic problems. Little attempt is made to address the underlying conditions such as low motivation, poverty, poor nutrition, or inadequate instruction that cause underachievement. It would be surprising if retention or limited retention-plus policies substantially altered children's achievement. Underachieving children require educational experiences that affect their rates of early learning. Contrast this reactive approach to intervention with prevention. Instead of waiting until the early signs of academic failure are evident, proactive education support would seek to promote the skills and attitudes needed for mastery of the grade-level curriculum before learning difficulties are observed. Prevention programs do this by addressing the underlying causes that give rise to underachievement such as building language and literacy skills before formal reading instruction, instilling pride in achievement, enhancing motivation to learn, and promoting family-school partnerships to help reinforce learning at home. Not surprisingly, programs that succeed in these areas are associated with higher levels of school achievement and lower rates of grade retention. The importance of prevention is easily lost in an era of school accountability and high-stakes testing, which highlight children's learning difficulties. Given the consistent evidence that retention is not an effective strategy for improving children's school success and growing evidence that retention plus remediation strategies do little to enhance children's achievement, the alternatives to retention appear to deserve much higher funding priority than they currently receive. Among these alternatives are universal access to high quality preschool education, full day kindergarten programs, reduced class sizes in the early grades, family-school partnerships that provide family resource centers in schools, and school restructuring programs. Instructional Model and the Application of Biotechnology Knowledge Problem Solving in Biotechnology by High School Stude

This study was a pretest and posttest experimental research design which set out to investigate the impact of an Instructional Model Ekwale Ada's Instructional Model on the application of biotechnology knowledge by high school students in the Anglophone Subsection of Education in Cameroon. That is to investigate whether students taught with the Ekwale Ada's Instructional Model for Biotechnology Knowledge Application exhibit a higher level of problem solving in biotechnology than students who were taught without the model traditional methods of teaching . The Ekwale Ada's Instructional Model for Biotechnology Knowledge Application was an instructional package which integrated Inquiry based learning Hands on , collaborative learning cooperative learning , Demonstrations, increase in the length of time learners are engaged in activities, Scaffolding and Remediation. The target population was Upper Sixth Science students in the Anglophone Subsection of Education in the North West Region, South West Region, and some displaced Upper Sixth Science students from North West and South West Regions into the Littoral Region for the 2018 2019 academic year. The researcher constructed a Biotechnology Application Test BAT in the form of a pretest and a post test. These tests contained three sections An MCQ section, a short answer section and a section in which practical activities were carried out.The indicator of biotechnology knowledge application was problem solving in biotechnology. For problem solving, the researcher created an inventory for the respondents to attend to which involved identification of a problem in the society which can be solved by a biotechnology product Description of the problem clearly Statement of multiple solutions to the problem Selection of the best solution to the problem Statement of the consequences of the best solution and usage of the best solution to solve the problem. The researcher created a five point inventory scale which ranged from excellent 5 marks Good 4 marks average 3 marks below average 2 marks and poor 1mark used to grade the problem solving activities. The students who were taught with the Ekwale Ada's Instructional Model for biotechnology knowledge Application experimental group scored higher in problem solving than those who were taught with traditional methods control group with a calculated independent t test value of 58.28 for the experimental group and 1.40 for the control group with a critical t value of 1.96 at 0.05 level of significance with 70 degrees of freedom. The sample of the study was 72 science high school students who offer biology 36 students for the experimental group and 36 students for the control group . Out of the 36 students from both the experimental and control groups, 18 were males and 18 were females making a total of 36 males and 36 females for the whole experiment. The sample was obtained from one government school, one mission school and one lay private school in each region. In the North West Region, 24 students were sampled 12 males and 12 females 08 from GBHS Bayelle, 08 from St Paul High School Nkwen and 08 from St Michael's High School . 24 students were sampled in the South West Region 12 males and 12 females 08 from GHS Buea, 08 from Baptist High School and 08 from Frankfils Comprehensive College Buea . In the Littoral Region, 24 displaced students 12 from the North West Region and 12 from the South West Region were sampled 12 males and 12 females 08 from GBHS Bonaberi, 08 from PHS Douala and 08 from Mother Theresa College Bonaberi Douala . Therefore the sample was 72 individuals 36 for the experimental group and 36 for the control group .The study was an experimental study in which a teacher made pretest was administered to both the experimental and control groups the students of the experimental group were taught with the Ekwale Ada's Instructional Model for biotechnology knowledge application treatment while those of the control group were taught without the model traditional methods of teaching . After the treatment, a teacher made post test was administered both to the experimental and the control groups. The experimental group was located in GHS Mamfe while the control group was located in Progressive Comprehensive High School Bamenda. One non directional hypothesis was stated in both the null and alternate forms. The null hypothesis was 1. There is no significant difference in problem solving in biotechnology between students taught with the Ekwale Ada's model and those who were taught without the model. The data for the pre test and the post test for the experimental group and control group were collected in the form of scores. The data was analysed using the SPSS Programme. The independent t test was used to find out the difference in means of the scores of the pretest of the experimental group and the control group and the difference in mean of the scores of the posttest of the experimental group and the control group. The null hypothesis was rejected and the alternate hypothesis was retained. They indicated that there was a significant difference in the means of the post test of the experimental group and the control group.The result of the study was 1. There was a significant difference in problem solving in biotechnology between students taught with the Ekwale Ada's Model and those who were taught without the model. The experimental group on whom the treatment was administered performed significantly better 58.28 than the control group 1.40 on whom the treatment was not administered. This nation is ours to shape, to create, to criticize, and to democratically raise our voices. As I stand in front of my class, the definition of democracy that was taught to me in my youth rings through my ears: a nation of, by, and for the people. This was a main principle upon which this nation was built. Unfortunately, those same forefathers were slave owning, misogynist, white men. Their idea of democracy was never to include all of the people. But they were onto something remarkable. I think the true potential of democracy, one where the people have an informed, legitimate, and constant say in the shaping of this nation, is something we should strive for. To that end, I have chosen to struggle to make my school more democratic. Indeed, my struggle begins within my very own classroom where I try to make my curriculum and my class environment democratic. I canu2019t say this is an easy task. Our schools are over-crowded and under-funded. Add to that, a conservative need for artificial and superficial "accountability" causing congress people, district big wigs, and administrators to scramble for higher test scores, and my workplace often seems the antithesis of democratic. Nevertheless, when I close my classroom door, what goes on is up to my students and me. As a teacher committed to enacting a socially just curriculum, I believe that having a democratic classroom, or one that strives to be democratic, is imperative. Returning to my sophomoric definition (of, by, and for the people), there are many ways I can see enacting democracy in the classroom: through environment and control issues and through curriculum and methodology. My classroomu2019s desks are never consistently arranged. Their patterns differ depending upon the activities. For instance, a circle is used for whole class readings and community circles, pods are used for group work, and semi-circles are used for performances and presentations. But never are the dreaded straight rows seen. This inconsistency in desk arrangements should not imply that I am an inconsistent teacher. Rather, I view myself as a facilitator who consistently helps to focus a democratic education on the students themselves. We as a class must become a community that shares, learns, and grows together. Staring at the back of a community member does not allow for an interchange of knowledge. In a democracy, every member counts. In order to begin to understand how to listen and value every member in the big world, we practice listening to and valuing one another in our classroom. What do I mean that a class must become a community? Community, among other things, means a place where students feel welcome, comfortable, and a sense of belonging. These feelings enable them to be willing and able to share and take risks with one another. If you think back to your own high school angst, you will know how difficult this concept is. Nevertheless, I struggle daily to create community in the class. First and most important, every Friday we have community circle. This is a place where for a half an hour or more we discuss what is going right and wrong in the class and we get to know each other better. These community circles have brought forth tears, laughter, anger, and countless other emotions. As students learn to trust each other more, they are more willing to share and to learn with each other. Also, as they learn to trust each other, they keep each other "in check," which effectively eliminates any discipline problem I might have. Creating community in the classroom is not the end in itself. Rather, it is the means to creating a space where the study and practice of democracy and democratic principles can take place. I believe that corporations and the myth of the individual (i.e. "Pull yourself up by your boot straps," "America, the land of opportunity," the myth of the poor immigrant who becomes a millionaire) have overtaken democracy. This acquisition has been systematic and its origins can be traced through the history of racism, sexism, and classism. And that is precisely what we study in my class. Now, I am by no means an expert in any of these subjects. But my lack of expertise is precisely what allows me to be open enough to learn from my students who experience racism, sexism, and classism every day. What do racism, sexism, and classism have to do with democracy? Well, their existence and institutionalization have contributed to denying us our democratic rights both historically and presently. In order to regain these rights, we must understand that they have been taken from us, and then understand how, when, where, and why they were taken. To that end, I design lessons where we investigate these "-isms" in our world today. We investigate these modern day realities while at the same time tracing their history. A lot of the history I teach debunks myths and half-truths. Investigating textbooks is one of the methods that I use. Textbooks play a part in perpetuating our misperceptions by presenting an unrealistic, almost mythical version of history and the American dream. Textbook investigation leads to a more critical understanding of target audiences and the "purpose" of writing any particular material. This is one of the most effective ways to raise consciousness of my students. Consciousness raising is an important step in the struggle to return democracy to our lives. Once we know what is really going on, it is easier to resist and to struggle for change. The focus of education must be the possibilities of tomorrow. Students must be given the ability to read the world while simultaneously learning to empathize with the individuals in the world. Role-plays, debates, skits, and many alternative methods along this vein are the best way to elicit empathy. I believe in my students. I believe that with the proper foundations, they will create a better world. I do not teach these historic injustices to be cynical and bitter. Rather, I feel it is vital that students know the truth. In addition to our historic and modern investigations, we also learn about different forms of resistance. By the end of the year, I hope that my students have a beginning understanding of the power and necessity of groups for positive change. Once armed with the truth and the knowledge of the power of resistance, students will be more capable of combating and resisting our oppressive society. Yet knowledge is only one part of the equation. Another part is action. Keeping true to the maxim that we learn best when actually doing something, I strive to incorporate action into my curriculum. That is to say, in our class community, we actually practice acts of resistance. These acts can be anything from listening to historic and contemporary songs of resistance, to teaching other students the "true" history of the United States, to actually organizing against injustices both in and out of school. One of the most successful projects that we completed this year was making class presentations to other classes and other schools about the subjects we were studying in our class. The actual organizing process is a bit risky due to legal issues, but suffice it to say that the opportunity for students to join in a youth organization on their own time to combat school injustices is presented. After just one semester in our class, my students have gained a much greater understanding of what resistance is and how it feels to be a part of it. This curriculum is designed to raise my studentsu2019 consciousness, to give them the tools necessary to read the world, and to show them models of change. At the same time, I am trying to develop my studentsu2019 belief in themselves and in each other. I often times expect my students to take large risks, be it in their presentations, in community circle, or in asking them to look at the world in a different way. I believe that in a democratic classroom or in a democratic world, it is vital that members be equipped with the power to think for themselves, the ability to critically analyze a situation, and the understanding that they have an important responsibility to a larger group. These are the things that I practice in my classroom and that I hope my students practice in their lives. As any good teacher, my methods, curriculum, and thoughts on the above matters are constantly evolving. I do not present this as any sort of final thoughts on the subject. Yet, as my experience and understanding of the injustices that we face increases, I become more and more convinced that a truly liberating education is imperative. No matter what great things we achieve in our classroom community, we must reopen our classroom door at the end of the day. There we face the labyrinth that is our school and all the problems and possibilities that exist there. Unfortunately, my struggle to bring democracy to the larger school environment is not one I can detail here. But rest assured there is a struggle, one that I fight with the help of my students and my colleagues. We are at a very exciting time in this nationu2019s history. As demographics change so rapidly, and our African American students actually become a majority in this nation, tomorrowu2019s possibilities are endless.
