Henry VIII, the second Tudor king, ascended the throne at just 18 in 1509. His marriage to Catherine of Aragon produced only one child, Mary, prompting a desperate quest for a male heir. When the Pope denied his request for an annulment, Henry took drastic measures, leading to Parliament's passage of laws that diminished papal authority in England. This resulted in the formation of the Church of England, with Henry as its head. His marriage to Anne Boleyn also ended tragically, highlighting the tumultuous nature of his reign and marital issues.

CHANGE IN ENGLAND ENGLAND UNDER HENRY VIII
BASIC FACTS: • Henry VIII(8th) • 2nd king of the Tudor dynasty • 2nd son to Henry VII (7th) • 1st son Arthur died • 18yrs old when he became king in 1509 • Smart, good looking, athletic, big eater/drinker • Married Catherine of Aragon (Brother’s widow)(Daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain)
BY 1527 HENRY (36yrs) HAS A BIG PROBLEM • Henry has only one kid • 1516 Mary (GIRL!) • Believed he needed a son to inherit the English crown and prevent another civil war like the War of the Roses • SOLUTION: Get a divorce (or annulment from the Pope)-have the marriage declared illegal
So…………………………… • 1527 – Henry asks the Pope to grant him an annulment • Pope’s response: “NO!” • Pressured by Charles V (Holy Roman Emperor) because Catherine is his aunt
1529 – Henry decides to take things into his own hands • Calls Parliament • Parliament passes several laws that strip the Pope of any power in England • Parliament legalized Henry VIII’s divorce to Catherine
1533 – Henry is divorced and married Anne Boleyn (20 yrs old) • Anne has a baby—EGADS!!!!! – A GIRL! (Elizabeth) • No sons • Henry decides he needs to get rid of Anne, HOW? • Accuses Anne of treason and adultery • Placed in the prison tower and beheaded by 1536
1534-Henry with the help of Parliament passed the ACT OF SUPREMACY (King is the head of the Church in England, NOT the Pope) • The new Church of England (1534-on): • King or Queen is the head of the church • Catholic church’s money/land now part of the royal treasury • Catholic church’s land is sold to nobles and middle class • Service basically the same (no changes in rituals and doctrine) • Thomas More beheaded – refused to take oath to be loyal to King and not the Pope
