Types 1 & 2
  • Product improvement
    • The improvement of existing products with regards to pollution prevention and environmental care.
  • Product redesign
    • The product concept stays the same, but parts of the product are developed further or replaced by others.

  • Function innovation
    • Involves changing the way the function is fulfilled eg a move from answering machines to voice mail.
  • System innovation
    • New products and services requiring changes in the related infrastructure and organisations.

  • Factor 20 cannot be achieved solely through redesigning existing products or from producing a similar output in a different way.
  • This level of environmental improvement will be determined by a systems focus alone.
  • Only as a result of questioning the real impacts of what we do today can significant improvements occur.
  • Function & System Innovation presents interesting challenges to all sectors
  • This is yet to be addressed in any significant way by any sector
  • Current ecodesign tends to be focussed around product improvement and product redesign
