  1. What is a Server Client Network? Montana State University Billings

  2. Introduction Let’s start by setting up some analogies for a server. Think of the words Serve and Service.

  3. Service with a Smile • The waitress who brings you your burger and fries is a server. • The old gas stations were called “Service Stations”. • Police officers are associated with the phrase to serve and protect.

  4. A Rose by any other name... • A server in terms of the Internet is a computer connected to a network that serves data files. • A server describes the role of the computer and software that is on it. • A server is the software component and the hardware component.

  5. A Rose by any other name... • All servers are computers. • Not all computers are servers. • Server software can turn any computer into a server.

  6. What is a Client? • a computer that accesses a server in a network. • an application that is designed to use information provided across a network.

  7. Protocols • Before a computer can serve files to other computers a common language must be established. • A protocol is an agreed upon method for two computers to communicate.

  8. TCP/IP • The Internet uses a protocol called TCP/IP. The Internet was first established so that different types of computers could talk to each other. • Each computer on the network is assigned an IP address. This address appears like numbers: 123.45.67.89

  9. Your Server or Mine • The names associated with the Internet are managed by DNS (domain name server) that assigns a name to the number on a computer. • Any PC can be used as a server with the proper software and Network card installed.

  10. A server is… • A computer that serves files to other computers. • A software program designed to serve files to other computers. • The role a computer plays in a network. • The waitress who brings you your burger and fries

  11. The Server Client Model

  12. The Server Client Model • The server is a central computer where all data is stored. • The client is a computer with appropriate software to access the data.

  13. Intranet • An Intranet is a private network. • COT provides an Intranet for you to log into and store your files. • Notice that an Intranet has a server that all the client computers can connect to. • Information goes both ways.

  14. Internet • The Internet is a public network that connects smaller networks together. • Your browser is a client for the Internet.

  15. Workgroups • Homes and small offices typically use workgroup networks. • There is not a designated storage place. (No dedicated server!) • Any PC in the Network can “talk” to any other PC. • All computers are servers and clients as needed
