  5. 2. Wild landscapes – The Key Criteria • 2 key criteria proposed – axes of wildness 1. Ecosystems Axis: Factors which decrease as we move up this axis: No. alien species , Degree of cultivation (including forestry) and domestic stock numbers. Presence of near natural levels of herbivores likely further up the axis as would the presence of carnivores (e.g. wildcat) and large raptors. • 2. Scale Axis: Scale - interpreted here in its broadest sense, to include: distance from nearest road, density of human artefacts closeness to nearest urban centers (together influence an areas apparent naturalness) Geographic size

Wildland – The Key Issues • Lack of understanding and definition of concept and of areas themselves • Lack of clear valuation and recognition of benefits • Strong RD focus in Scotland conflict with wildland agenda ? • Weaknesses in planning framework – bulldozed roads/transmission lines etc. • Tourism and high visitor numbers • Long term funding and volunteer availability ? • Renewable energy (HEP/windpower) • CAP reform • Deer (and fences)/domestic stock numbers – reduced vegetation quality • Noise pollution/light pollution (aircraft/military operations) • Forestry – Exotic species/plantation structure • Landownership ?
