  4. Recap of previous lessons • Representation of ideas – Violence is seen as permissible as long as it brings justice. • How is this representation of an idea relevant to the symbolic code (binary opposites) • How is this representation of an idea relevant to the key aspect of Audience?

  5. Recap of Previous Lessons • Think back to when we discussed binary opposites. • Who are the most obvious binary opposites in “The Untouchables”? • In what way are they opposites? Therefore something dramatic/extreme must happen to Ness to drive him to violence and murder in order to achieve his aims. What do you think this is?

  6. The Duality of Ness’s Character • What do you think this means? • What is the duality in Ness’s character?

  7. Key Scene – Duality in Ness’s Character • Watch the “Train Station Scene” again very closely. Remember we have already discussed how this is classic De Palma style. • Can you see any ways in which the duality of Ness’s character is symbolised or represented?

  8. Symbolism in the Key Scene • Now – Strap yourself in and prepare to set your face to stunned. • We are going to consider the key scene as a succession of very short frames and examine a classic example of De Palma style.

  9. Summary of Key Ideas • The representation of violence as permissible when used to achieve justice • “The Train Station” key scene highlights this idea • There are two sides to the character of Ness. (Duality) • Malone symbolically possesses Ness after his death to drive him on to achieve vengeance and his goal.
