  3. history and description of the NationalPDS model • History: The idea of a Professional Development School (PDS) was first proposed by the Holmes Group in the early 1980’s. There are now PDS sites in many states throughout the country. • Description: A Professional Development School is often described as the education equivalent of a teaching hospital.

The History of Our Current Collaboration • Associate Supterintendent of CCSD and UGA Director of OSE hired in Fall 2007 • Collaborative planning meetings begin, Jan. 2008 • Visits to PDS sites 2008 and 2009 • New CCSD Superintendent hired July 2009 • First PDS, J.J. Harris Elementary, opened August 2009 • Planning for a PDS District, 2010-2011 • Implementation of the PDS District: 4 additional PDS sites,Fall 2011

The Goals of our Current Collaboration To improve P-16 student learning: • Develop and practice a shared vision for educational practitioners (prospective teachers, experienced teachers, school leaders and university professors). • Connect educational research with practice by sharing the collective expertise of educators from CCSD and UGA COE. • Participate in a continuous process of shared inquiry.

Foundational Beliefs • Focus on relationships and communication • Build trust and foster transparency to strengthen our partnership • Recognize strengths of the Clarke County School District and the University of Georgia and support the development of all partners • Allow the partnership to grow organically • Work towards greater coherence about teaching, learning and assessment

CCSD/UGA Professional Development School District: Elements and Models • Model 1: All Schools • Work with District-wide Professor-in-Residence • May contract with COE Office of Outreach & Engagement • Model 2: As above plus • Placement of UGA students in classrooms for field work and/or student teaching • Model 3: As above plus • One or more College of Education courses taught on-site • Model 4: As above plus • Professor-in-Residence—a full-time UGA faculty member who contracts for a period of 2-3 years to be at the school 50% of the time during the academic year • This model requires specific contractual and financial agreements

CCSD/UGA Professional Development School District: Organizational Structure • School-based Steering Committees, includes school leadership, teachers, and UGA faculty actively involved at the school • Coordinating Council, includes principal, instructional coach, Professor-in-Residence or On-site Instructor from each Model 3 and Model 4 school, CCSD and College of Education leadership • Executive Committee, subset of the Coordinating Council
