  1. Chemical synthesis How are new chemicals made and purified. Starter: Complete the card sort to order the stages in chemical synthesis.

  2. Making magnesium sulfate salt. Uses: Soap Laxative ingredient Spray for healthy plant growth Food supplement for animals For making further chemicals.

  3. What reaction can we use? • Which metal will be used? • Which acid can we use? 3) List the reactions we could use?

  4. Why use magnesium oxide or carbonate ? • Magnesium is expensive so using it as an oxide or carbonate is cheaper. What are the potential waste products? Which would be better to use?

  5. Task • Next to each of the diagrams, explain what happens using the information to help you. Insert breaking bad pic

  6. 2) Risk assessment • Write a risk assessment based on these 2 hazard warning symbols. • INSERT GOGGLES AND IRRITANT

  7. 3) Carry out the reaction What temperature is used? Why is a stirring rod used?

  8. 4) Filter the left over solid. Is the desired product in the filter paper or evaporating dish? Why is the product filtered?

  9. 5) Drying the product What are these 3 methods designed to do? What is the role of the evaporating dish and Bunsen Burner? What happens in the petri dish? What does the dessicator do?

  10. 6) Checking the purity and yield.

  11. Task • Make a flow diagram to show the major stages in chemical synthesis. • List the equipment used at each point.

  12. Improving the rate • How could the rate of reaction be improved? • How would this affect the cost/profit?
