  1. Environmental Systems and Society SL 2 Course Expectations, Grading and Information Ms Oehlke

General Expectations • Pay attention, participate and have a good attitude • Have good attendance • Make up work when you are absent (website) • Be on time to class • Bring your text book and materials to class • Complete your homework for each class as well as you can • Respect other people and school property • Use class time well

  3. Please do not.. Drink soft drinks in class Eat junk food in class Use cell phones during class (If you actually need to use the phone, ask me and I will excuse you to make the important call.) Listen to ipods Disrupt the learning of other students Engage in horse play during experiments Misuse time during computer labs

  4. Required materials • A notebook for notes and homework • A ruler • A pen drive 4. A Scientific Calculator 5. The Environmental Systems Text book: Living in the Environment by Miller 6. The ESS Course Companion 7. Something to write with: pen and/or pencil 8. A folder for worksheets and handouts 9. A homework agenda 10. Access to the World Wide Web at home

  5. Class participation Class starts right away! Please remove head phones and take out your materials before the class starts without being asked. Write down your homework at the beginning of the lesson in your agenda Listen to other people when they speak Use class time productively. (Better use of class time = less homework!)

  6. Laboratory/ Practical work 20% of the coursework will be in the laboratory and the reports will be kept in a portfolio for the IB internal assessment. Read the hand outs before each practical and prepare data tables in advance. During the laboratory, write your own observations Make good use of the laboratory time. You will turn in your rough notes for each laboratory and the instructions for the lab.

  7. Laboratory continued Students who are absent must make up the practical as soon as possible after school or during a free period. Reports are due one week after the practical work is completed. Start writing the lab report the same day that the practical work is finished. 10% of the grade will be given for each day that the work is late. The grade will be lowered by 10% for each week that the report is late. Reports will be submitted to turnitin.com and will be written individually. DO NOT send your lab report to “help” other students.

  8. Homework Expect to read, finish a project, or study between each lesson. Many of the readings are online. You are expected to check the website for links. If you are absent, check the website to find out what work was missed and try to do the assignment before the next lesson. http://www2.nido.cl/~doehlke/index.htm

  9. Quizzes • Quizzes are shorter than tests and include material from only one topic. • All quizzes must be made up as soon as possible if missed due to an absence. • You will be given at least a week notice to prepare for each quiz.

  10. Tests Tests follow each unit or set of units and are longer than quizzes. Tests and quizzes make up 65% of the course grade. You will be given a week notice before each test.

  11. Grading: 65% Unit Test and quizzes 20% Laboratory reports 15% Projects, Assignments from the Course Companion, and Discussion Grade

  12. IB Assessement • External Assessment: Two exams • Paper 1: 1 hour 45 marks 30% (short answer) • Paper 2: 2 hours 65 marks 50% (short answer and two essays) • Internal Assessment • Fieldwork / Practical work 20% 42 marks total – your best work from this year

  13. Integrity Do what is right, even when no one is looking… All individual work must be unique GROUP work must have ALL names on the top and it should be clear that each person has contributed to the work. Use turnitin.com for all lab reports and projects

  20. Final project After the IB exam in May…. Project to teach students from either elementary or middle school

  21. Internal Assessment 30 hours of experimental work Group Four Project PSOW form - Internal Assessment Portfolio 20% of the IB score

  22. Extra help / Make up Monday, Tuesday and Thursday LUNCH! Please come at 1:00 After school: Monday - Thursday Any time you make an appointment Email… I check every night.

  23. Study area at home Be sure you have a comfortable, quiet place to study at home. Remove distractions including the television, radio and computer from the area. Focus when you study so that you are efficient and you get some rest after you are finished!

  24. More about home study Do not keep computers, TV or radio in your room. Eat healthy snacks Avoid caffeine Give yourself study goals
