  2. What is a comma? A punctuation mark ( , ) used to indicate a separation of ideas

  3. FANBOYS: A COMMA’s best friend FANBOYS refers to the acronym used to remember coordinating conjunctions: FOR, AND, NOR, BUT, OR, YET, SO. Coordinating conjunctions are used with commas to separate items in a sentence.

  4. 5 basic types of commas LISTER LINKER INTRODUCER CLARIFIER INSERTER

  5. Lister Uses at least 1 comma and 1 fanboy Separates a list of at least 3 items Ex. My favorite fruits are bananas, peaches, and plums. I need pencils, notepads, and textbooks for class.

  6. Linker Uses 1 comma and 1 fanboy Separates 2 complete sentences Ex. There is nothing on television, so I will take a nap. Sentence 1- There is nothing on television. Sentence 2- I will take a nap. My car needs to be cleaned, and I need an oil change. Sentence 1- My car needs to be cleaned. Sentence 2- I need an oil change.

  7. introducer Uses only 1 comma Format- fragment, sentence Part 1 introduces part 2 Ex. In spite of having a rough day, I am still smiling. Since I began exercising, I have a lot more energy.

  8. clarifier Uses only 1 comma Format- sentence, fragment Part 2 clarifies part 1 The opposite of an introducer Ex. I am still smiling, in spite of having a rough day I love bright colors, particularly pink and yellow.

  9. inserter Uses 2 commas Separates extra information that describes the subject or direct object in the sentence Ex. Kally, my favorite niece, is visiting me this summer. My dog, eyes big and bright, begged me to take him for a walk around the park.
