  2. Presentation Overview • Quickly outline NDIIPP and its goals • Describe progress in setting up network of digital preservation partners • Focus on 8 partnerships/consortia • Next steps: working with States April 2005

  3. NDIIPP Background • Created by legislation in December 2000 • Funds (some matching) provided to implement national preservation strategy • Aim is to implement national strategy for preserving significant “born-digital” content April 2005

  4. NDIIPP Goals • Build a network of partnerships • Explore protocols and standards to support partnership operations • Support development of tools, models, and methods for digital preservation April 2005

  5. Network of Preservation Partners • Volume and complexity of digital content calls for a distributed approach • LC is providing resources and leadership to network of preservation partnerships • Primary outcomes: • Identify and preserve significant content • Leverage resources and expertise • Identify best practices, develop tools, raise awareness April 2005

  6. First round of NDIIPP Partnerships • 8 competitive awards, launched this year • Senior LC staff oversee each project • Partners collect/preserve content, collaborate with LC and each other • 3 year term, report to Congress April 2005

  7. California Digital Library • Partners include NYU, U North Texas, Texas Center for Digital Knowledge • Subject is developing web archiving tools for government and political information • Focus is on political activities, including 2003 California gubernatorial recall election April 2005

  8. Emory University • Partners include U of Louisville, VPI, UVA, FSU, Auburn, Georgia Tech • Subject is development of MetaArchive of Southern Digital Culture • Partners to select and preserve digital exhibits, archives, theses and dissertations April 2005

  9. UC Santa Barbara • Partner is Stanford University • Subject is testing federated preservation of geospatial images and data • Goal is to build a National Geospatial Digital Archive April 2005

  10. North Carolina State University • Partner is NC Center for Geographic Information and Analysis • Subject is collection and preservation of geospatial data resources from NC state and local government agencies • Content includes digitized maps, GIS data, and remote sensing resources April 2005

  11. University of Maryland • Partners are GMU, 2 law firms, Internet Archive • Subject is preservation of digital materials that document birth of the dot.com era • Content includes business plans, venture capital pitches, and variety of legal and business records April 2005

  12. University of Michigan • Partners include NARA and several social science data and research centers • Subject is appraisal, acquisition, and preservation of survey datasets • Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research will facilitate distributed partnership April 2005

U of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign • Partners are OCLC, Tufts, Michigan State, and state libraries of AZ, CT, IL, NC, WI • Subject is development of tools to help with selection and preservation of various types digital material • Content includes state government publications and audio-visual recordings April 2005

  14. Educational Broadcasting Corp (Thirteen/WNET) • Partners are WGBH, PBS, NYU • Subject is establishment of procedures and national standards to preserve digital TV • Content includes shows such as Nature, American Masters, NOVA, and Frontline April 2005

  15. Partner Affinity Groups • Affinity Groups for primary issues that cut across projects: • Technical Architecture • Rights and Restrictions • Collection/Selection • Economic Sustainability April 2005

  16. Next Round of Partnerships: States • LC exploring collaboration with States • Focus is state government digital information • Workshops with teams from all states representing state libraries, archives, CIOs • Developing digital preservation toolkit with Center for Technology in Government • Partnership with IMLS April 2005
