  4. The Olympic flame in ancient times The flame of the modern day Olympic games is lit before each game at the site of an ancient Temple stadium complex in Olympia which is in the country of Greece.

  5. Facts about the London 2012 Torch Relay There will be 8000 torch bearers doing the relay! The oldest is 84 and the youngest is 8! Many participants are in wheelchairs or are disabled in some other way. The relay will take 70 days, from the 19 May to the 27 July 2012. The distance of the relay is approximately 8000 miles

Facts about the 2012 Olympic baton The design of the London 2012 Torch was inspired by a series of ‘threes’ that are found in the history of the Olympic Games and the vision of the Olympic Movement: • the 3 Olympic Values of respect, excellence and friendship; 2. the 3words that make the Olympic motto – faster, higher, stronger; 3. the fact that the UK has hosted the Olympic Games in 1908, 1948 and will host them for the thirdtime in 2012.

  12. The Olympic Flame The tradition of lighting an OlympicFlame comes from the Ancient Greeks. During the ancient Olympic Games, a sacred flame was lit from the sun’s rays at Olympia,

  13. The flame stayed lit until the games were completed.

  14. The torch was lit at Olympia in Greece and then carried by relay to the host-city of the games.

  15. The last runner carries the torch into the Olympic Stadium during the Opening Ceremony. The flame is then lit from the torch and will remain lit until it is put out during the Closing Ceremony
