Exploring Woodchucks: My Research on Animal Behavior and Ecology in Oregon

During my family's trip to the Oregon Coast, I discovered notable differences in animal behavior and tree damage compared to the Idaho forests. This observation sparked my curiosity: how much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? My name is Marcy Pishl, and in this presentation, I will share my research journey, detailing the hypothesis I developed, the experiments I conducted, and the results I obtained. Join me as I dive into the fascinating world of woodchucks and their ecological impact.

  1. PACE Speech Notecards Once I was travelling with my family to the Oregon Coast. In the wooded areas, I noticed that there were quite a few differences between the animals there and those I was familiar with in the Idaho forests. I also noticed that there were quite a few trees that appeared to be chewed on by other animals: beavers and wood chucks. This experience led me to my question: how much wood could a wood chuck chuck if a wood chuck could chuck wood? My name is Marcy Pishl and today I’m going to talk about the research I did, the hypothesis I formed based on my question, my experiment, and the experiment’s results.

  2. PACE Speech Notecards • Wooded areas in Oregon • Different from Idaho forests  • Animal activity led to question: How much wood…. • Introduce myself • Preview: Research, Hypothesis, Experiment, and Results

  3. PACE Speech Notecards • Set them up: • Put your name on the note cards—each one • Number the note cards (1-8) • Title the note cards (Introduction, Background, Hypothesis, etc.) • Use short key words/phrases
