  1. Chapter 2 Section 1 Planet Earth

  2. Key Terms in the Section Hydrosphere Lithosphere Atmosphere Biosphere Continental Shelf

  3. Our Solar System Earth is part of our solar system, which is made up of the sun and all of the countless objects that revolve around it. At the center is the sun- a star, or ball of burning gases. 109 times wider than Earth.

  4. Sun The sun creates a strong pull of gravity that keeps all the planets revolving around it.

  5. Planets Terrestrial planets- Solid, Rocky crust. -Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. -Closer to the Sun Gas Giant planets- Gassy and less dense. -Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. - Farther from the Sun

  6. How is it like on different planets? Mercury and Venus are scalding hot. Earth only planet that has liquid on surface. Mars is a cold barren desert. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are all gaseous so they are inhabitable.

  7. Asteroids, Comets, and Meteoroids Asteroids- small irregularly shaped planet like objects. Comets- icy dust particles and frozen gases that look like bright balls with long feather tails. Meteoroids- space debris, chunks of rock and iron

  8. Water, Land, and Air Hydrosphere- Water Lithosphere- Land Atmosphere- Air we breathe 6000 miles up Biosphere- part of earth that supports life( people, animals, and plants)

  9. Continental Shelf- Part of the continent that extends underwater.

  10. Heights and Depths of the Earth Mount Everest- Highest point on the Earth located in South Asia. (29,035 feet) Dead Sea- Lowest Point on dry land in South West Asia (1,349 feet below sea level). Mariana Trench- Deepest part of Earth. Underwater Canyon located in the Pacific Ocean near Guam (35,827 feet deep).
