  3. A pilot service was implemented and evaluated in early 2005, with chosen sections over a 3 month period Success of pilot led to full roll-out for the service in academic year 2006/7 with an initial college-funded budget for calls, of £1,500 Background

  4. Usage has risen dramatically this year. Current figures for 2006 are: Sep: 1123 calls Oct: 2815 calls Nov: 1879 calls Dec: 866 calls Now averaging 2000 calls per month Current unit cost is 6.5p, on 1-5,000 per month band Take-Up

  5. The texting gateway is provided by TextAnywhere www.textanywhere.net TextAnywhere supplied our developers with the API Cardonald staff designed a web interface to this from the in-house online attendance system, and which draws on our student records system (Unit-E) Student numbers are entered on enrolment forms at registration. Students give permission by default in completing phone number details Methodology

  6. The TextAnywhere service allows the administrator a full log of all calls made and the text of messages Call statistics can be accessed at any time via Reporting Services tool (Report Manager - Database query tool) Billing is to a central point in the College, but Report Manager allows subdivision of costs Administration/Records

  22. Comments “I think it’s a great idea and really useful. Easy to use and would recommend that we keep it on. The problems occur when students claim not to have money in their phone and don’t use it. I would like to say to our next intake that it is going to be an important way to keep in touch and ensure that they use it accordingly. I think we need to be able to receive replies in order to make it function fully” “Text service is excellent. Students seem to really like it and it makes getting in touch with them really simple and straightforward – has certainly saved me lots of time! Have used both for individual situations and class groups. Used it to tell students about role-plays, assessment deadlines and class time changes. Also good for sending messages of encouragement! Hope it continues” “I think the TextAnywhere is a great tool, as it enables the College/Staff to contact students extremely quickly, reliable (the person sending texts can see if the text message has actually arrived at the handset) and also a more modern way of contacting people (almost everyone has a mobile).”
