  1. Learning the Italian Renaissance through The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

  2. Did you know that each of the Ninja Turtles were named after famous artists? • Here are somefamous artists from the Italian Renaissance era. You may remember Leonardo da Vinci as the artist who painted the Last Supperand the Mona Lisa. Michelangelo painted the Sistine chapel, including the depiction of Genesis with God reaching out to Adam on the ceiling. Donatello was a famous sculptor. Many of Raphael's paintings can be found in the Vatican.

  3. What was the Italian Renaissance? • ITALIAN RENAISSANCE (1330-1550) • General Summary: The Italian Renaissance is known as the BIRTH of the Renaissance Era.

  4. In the Late Middle Ages, the European Renaissance began in Tuscany and centered in the cities of Florence and Siena. • The Italian Renaissance began the opening phase of the Renaissance, a period of great cultural change and achievement in Europe that spanned the period from the end of the 13th century to about 1600. It marked the transition between Medieval and Early Modern Europe. • The word renaissance means “rebirth”and the era is best known for the renewed interest in the culture and art of classical antiquity.

  5. Did you Know… • The Italian Renaissance is best known for its cultural achievements as well as: • Italian Renaissance literature • Renaissance humanists and epic authors. • Famous prose authors such as Machiavelli (The Prince). • Italian Renaissance painting exercised a dominant influence on Western painting for centuries afterwards. • Artists such as Michelangelo, Raphael, Botticelli, Titian, and Leonardo da Vinci. • Great architecture, with works such as Florence Cathedral and St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.

  6. Leonardo Da Vinci • He was: painter, sculptor, architect, musician, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, geologist. cartographer, botanist, and writer. He was considered to be a genius by many and he helped to define the Renaissance. • Let’s discuss each of these professions held Leonardo . • What do they mean? Hands up!

  7. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest painters of all time and perhaps the most talented person ever to have lived.Hisinterests were without precedent and "his mind and personality seem to us superhuman, the man himself mysterious and remote”. How Awesome Was He?

  8. The Mona Lisa • Probably the most famous painting ever created. • The Mona Lisa is an oil painting. Over time, oil paint begins to dry out and crack. In order to keep this from happening, The Louvre museum in Paris, keeps it behind glass and uses a bottle of red wine daily in a humidifier.

  9. He also studied and created detailed drawings of the human anatomy that are still relevant in medicine and anatomy books today!

  10. He was also an inventor

  11. He even invented a car in the 16th Century! • He even invented a car.

  12. Let’s learn a new word! • ANTHROPOMORPHISM • BREAK IT DOWN. Let’s Snap the Syllables together. • I will demonstrate 1st. Then all together… • Anthropomorphism is how the creators of the ninja turtles gave them character and chose their names.

  13. Anthropomorphism • The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were an example of Anthropomorphism, or personification: human form or other characteristics given to anything other than a human being. Examples include depicting deities with human form and ascribing human emotions or motives to forces of nature, Through Anthropomorphism, even a rock can be given life. • Now, time to compare and contrast the turtle to the artist.

  14. LEONARDO

  15. Leonardo, or Leo, is one of the four of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. In the Mirage/Image Comics, all four turtles wear red bandanas, but in other versions, he wears a blue bandana. His signature weapons are two ninjato. Throughout the various media, he is sometimes depicted as the eldest and leader of the four turtles, and the most disciplined. He is named after Leonardo da Vinci. I’d say they had similar personalities (leadership skills).

  16. Donatello THE MAN

  17. Donatello, was an early Renaissance Italian sculptor from Florence. He is, in part, known for his work in bas-relief, a form of shallow relief sculpture that, in Donatello's case, incorporated huge 15th-century developments in perspectival illusionism (realism in 3D).

  18. Donatello • Born in 1386 Donatello was the greatest Florentine sculptor of his age. He created many famous statues. However, the statue of Zuccone was created for the decoration of Florence Cathedral. It is cherished by the people of Florence. There is a famous story that Donatello kept saying 'speak, speak' as he sculptured it.

  19. ( I hope he wasn't too disappointed when the statue failed to 'speak'.)

  20. DONATELLO TNMT

  21. Turtle or…Nerdle? • Donatello (Don or Donnie) – The scientist, inventor, engineer, and technological genius, Donatello wears a purple mask and wields a bo staff. Donatello is perhaps the least violent turtle, preferring to use his knowledge to solve conflicts, but never hesitates to defend his brothers. He is named after the early Renaissance Italian artist and sculptor from Florence, Donatello. IMO: this turtle has interests more akin to Leonardo than Donatello the artist.

  22. Raphael

  23. Raphael’s Struggle • This artistwas faced with the daunting challenge presented by the work of Leonardo and Michelangelo and set out to study and learn from their paintings and sculptures. • Raphael lacked the depth of knowledge of Leonardo and could not match Michelangelo's power. • He was a likable and even tempered artist, virtues that made him a favorite with potential patrons.

  24. The Crucifixion was one of Raphael's most well known paintings. It is very beautiful yet lacks the shading and depth of his Italian artist pals.

  25. He also painted cherubs! A LOT!

  26. RAPHAEL: The TMNT This Turtle needed some Anger Management!

  27. How does the Turtle Contrast the Artist Raphael? • In the Comics, all four turtles wear red bandanas over their eyes, but unlike his brothers in other versions, he is the only one who keeps the red bandana. Raphael wields twin sai as his primary weapon. (In the Next Mutation series, his sai stick together to make a staff-like weapon.) • He is generally the most likely to experience extremes of emotion, and is usually depicted as being aggressive, sullen, and rebellious. • We know that Raphael the artist was well liked by most everyone. He was even tempered. I'd call that contrast!

  28. Why is this TMNT so angry? • The origin of Raphael's anger is not always fully explored, but in some incarnations appears to stem partly from the realization that they are the only creatures of their kind and ultimately alone. He also has a somewhat turbulent relationship with his older brother Leonardo because Leonardo thinks he is the group's leader. Raphael has issues. 

  29. Michealangelo

  30. Michelangelo was an Italian sculptor, painter, architect, poet, and engineer of the High Renaissance. He had a huge influence on the development of Western art. Despite making few accomplishmentsbeyond the arts, his versatility in the disciplines he took up was of such a high order that he is often considered a contender for the title of THERenaissance man, along with his fellow Italian Leonardo da Vinci.

  31. His most well known work, The Sistine Chapel. He painted the entire ceiling. He painted most all of this on his back!

  32. He also became a sculptor

  33. His most famous sculpture…David

  34. MICHEALANGELO TMNT

  35. Michelangelo/ My Favorite Turtle! • Michelangelo (Mike or Mikey) – An easy-going and free-spirited jokester, Michelangelo wears an orange mask and wields a pair of nunchakus. He is the least mature of the four Turtles and provides the comic relief. Michelangelo has an adventurous side coupled with a love of pizza.”.

  36. He is somewhat of a "surfer" boy and is often depicted with a Southern Californian accent. He is named after the Italian Renaissance painter, sculptor, architect, poet, and engineer, Michelangelo. His name was originally misspelled "Michaelangelo

  37. Agenda for this Lesson • Visually study the Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci. • Use the handout I made for you as a reference. In pencil, try to draw her but if that proves too challenging, you may trace her face, lightly. • After you have drawn The Mona Lisa, brainstorm of ways to recreate this painting by changing up the background and even her appearance (hair, clothes, etc.). • Outline and color very neatly! You are an artist now.

  38. Ideas for the Background • School, mall, restaurant, magazine cover, park, disco, rodeo, ballgame, grocery store, help me finish this.
