  2. Women give birth to babies, men don’t. Little girls are gentle and timid; boys are touch and adventurous. In many countries, women earn 70% of what men earn. Women can breast feed; men need a bottle for feeding babies. Women are in charge of raising children. Men are decision makers. In Ancient Egypt, men stayed at home and did weaving. Women handled family business. Women inherited property and men did not. Boys’ voices break at puberty, girls do not. Sex or Gender?

  5. When you hear the word gender equality, what comes to mind? Since we have international human rights standards for all, why is it important to talk about women’s human rights?   6. More than 70% of people living on less than 1$ a day are women. 80 million children have no access to school – most of them girls. Each day 1,400 women die in pregnancy and childbirth. Young women are two to six times more at risk of HIV infection than the population as a whole. Why Action is Needed

  7. One in five women will be a victim of rape or attempted rape in her lifetime. Across the world, on average, only 16% of elected politicians are women. Laws that promote gender equality are often ignored.

  8. Oxfam Canada is convinced that equality among women and men, girls and boys will have greatest impact in ending poverty and injustice and that without real progress in this area, sustainable change is not possible. Why Women’s Rights and Gender Equality?

  9. MDG1: Eliminate extreme poverty and hunger. Target: Reduce by half the number of people living on less than a dollar a day.The majority of those living on less than a dollar a day are female. Millennium Development Goals in Jeopardy!

  10. MDG2: Universal Primary Education Target: All children will have a full primary schooling by 2015. This target will not be reached unless MDG 3 is met and initiatives that encourages girls to remain in school are implemented. Millennium Development Goals in Jeopardy!

  11. MDG3: Promote gender equality and empower women. Target: Ensure gender equality in primary and secondary education by 2005. Although there has been some progress towards this goal, the target was not met by 2005. Millennium Development Goals in Jeopardy!

  12. MDG4: Reduce infant mortality.Target: Reduce by two-thirds by 2015. Despite girls’ natural resilience at birth, more girls than boys die before the age of five in many parts of the world. If action is not taken, MDG 4 will not be met either. Millennium Development Goals in Jeopardy!

  13. MDG5: Improve maternal health. Target: Reduce by three-quarters by 2015 the maternal mortality rate. Complications from pregnancy and childbirth are the leading cause of death among young women aged 15-19 in developing world. Millennium Development Goals in Jeopardy!

  14. MDG6: Tackle HIV and AIDS, malaria and other diseases. Target: Halt by 2015 and reverse the spread of HIV and AIDS, malaria and other diseases. Millennium Development Goals in Jeopardy!

  18. In their extreme old age a childless couple was granted a daughter. This made them very happy and they prayed to the gods every morning and evening to bless their child. The prayer was granted. As their daughter grew up it soon became obvious that she was a remarkable child. She could run further and faster than anyone in the village, her manners were good, she sang rather well, and she excelled in her studies. There was only one thing wrong, which spoilt everything. This was not a defect. The gods hadn’t cheated. She was indeed blessed with great ability.
