HW#7 • Handout: Church Reform and Crusades • Close read the handout. • Note: Many of you are not getting full credit because you are not annotating both sides of the margins for every paragraph! • Fill in the graphic organizer (Effects of the Age of Faith). • Answer all questions (1-5). • Due: tomorrow, March 14

  5. Activity #1 • On your own, close read the first side of the handout, The Authority of the Church. • Fill in the definitions • Complete the graphic organizer

  6. Problems in the church • Kings appointed church bishops (lay investiture). • Bishops sold positions in the church (simony) • Some priests were illiterate. • Village priests married and had families.

Church Organization and Reform • The clergy was restructured to resemble a kingdom (the Pope as it’s leader). • Pope Leo IX and Pope Gregory VII enforced laws against simony and the marriage of priests. • Larger churches were built (gothic cathedrals). • gothic - a style of architecture that was popular in Europe between the 12th and 16th centuries and uses pointed arches, thin/tall walls, and large windows.
