  1. A. The Shah family: Mr. and Mrs. Ranjit Shah – UAE No1 Son (Ashrin) – India No2 Son (Sanjay) – South Africa B. The Background Ranjit Shah was born in India, but emigrated to the United Arab Emirates in 1996 where he built a highly successful chain of Toyota distributorships. He sold his business in 2010 and is now semi-retired. His wife started a small cottage industry making a range of sauces and chutneys under the brand name of TOM (Taste of Mumbai). It has now developed into a business employing 80 staff, and Mrs Shah has received offers from a major food retailer.

The Background (continued) Ashrin Shah lives with his family in India where he runs a company (International Motorparts Ltd) manufacturing replacement parts for several makes of Japanese automobiles. For the moment, the company caters essentially for the domestic market but has ambitious expansion plans and is looking at building a distribution network through the setting-up of distributor companies in South-East Asia starting with Indonesia & Vietnam and Africa starting with South Africa, Mozambique and Kenya.

  3. C. The patriarch’s objectives Following the sale of his Toyota distributorships Ranjit Shah has substantial cash assets. The future sale of his wife’s business will generate additional funds. Ranjit Shah’s objectives are: To ensure the good governance of the global family business under his continued guidance. To provide working capital for development of the business of the two sons. To finance the education of the third generation of the Shah family. To mitigate the impact of personal and corporate tax.
