How to Get That Beautiful Fresh Lawn You’ve Always Dreamed Of A well-maintained, lush lawn is a green paradise for homeowners but may seem like a faraway dream found only in wealthy homes, and lifestyle magazines. This doesn’t have to be the case! Lawn maintenance will always require effort. It demands time, energy and money. But the most important thing to consider isn’t really how much, rather you should be more keen with HOW and WHEN it ought to be done. So for you to see that the perfect lawn you’ve always wanted isn’t really that hard to get, here are three things you need to do right and what you should know about them Don’t overdo the lawn mow We all want it neat and clean, but the most common mistake would be to “crew cut” your lawn. Scalping or mowing off more than a third of the grass’s height or leaf surface will injure the plant’s crown, which is the most important part of the grass that keeps it alive, leaving it vulnerable to weed invasion, drought, insects, and diseases. Longer grass blades increase photosynthesis. This makes the plant healthier, deeply rooted, and more resistant to lawn problems. To get the greener lush carpet every homeowner desires, the general rule would be to let the grass grow to a minimum height of 2.5 to 3 inches (7-8 centimeters) and of course, to keep it that way. Mow at least once a week Don’t mow your lawn too little either! According to Dr. John Rogers III, turf expert and Lawn Greek Author, skipping a weekly mow might seem harmless but it can cause lasting damages if done repeatedly. Extended intervals between mowings lead
to tall, shaggy lawns that when cut, create gaps between the blades where weeds can take over. Frequent trims also mean less clippings and less effort for a more aesthetic yard. Never mow with a dull blade. This will only hurt the lawn and cause discoloration. If the grass appears shredded or frayed after cutting, it’s time to sharpen up. Vary your mowing direction every now and then to prevent the grass from bending over. This helps to keep it upright and easier to cut. It is also important that you do not mow a wet turf. Not only is it harder and damaging to your equipment, trimming a wet lawn is an ideal way of spreading fungus and weeds! Keep that lawn healthy Water and nutrients are essential for beautiful fresh lawns. When it comes to grass, water only when needed, but no less often. You can tell the grass is dry and in need of refreshing once you start leaving footprints on it. Moist grass will spring back up. Healthy lawns require 1 to 1.5 inches of water each week and it is better to do it all at once than frequent light watering. Deep watering intervals promote deeper roots that are healthier, and will help conserve resources. The best time to rehydrate your yard would be early in the morning, before it gets hot. This ensures that moisture reaches the roots. It also allows the grass blades to dry quicker, preventing fungal growth. Remember to only apply water as fast as the ground can absorb it! Dry grass also appears silvery blue, that when left alone, turns brown. When this happens, don’t panic. Instead, find out whether the grass is dead or just dormant. Do this by pulling some grass. If you feel a resistance, it’s the latter and it will grow again once moisture levels are back to normal. When it comes to using fertiliser, more is not better as it will burn the grass. Always read the label and follow directions. Lori Brewer, from the Horticulture section of Cornell University, suggests that if your lawn is thick and dense with grass that grows vigorously, save up on plant food and skip the spring feed on your fertilizer schedule. Grass clippings are full of needed nitrogen and nutrients. Mulching and spreading them around the turf after a mow is a great fertiliser alternative. If you have pets who like to do their business on your lawn, it is ideal to scoop and dispose their waste immediately rather than to let it sit on the grass. It is not a good fertiliser material for the grass as it is highly concentrated and can cause burn spots. To prevent this, spray water or pour a bucketful on the area where your pet has relieved itself. Stop those weeds! Keep the weeds under control for the best chance at your beautiful lawn If you mow and feed your turf right, the you are unlikely to have to deal with pesky weeds and other plant problems. But that doesn’t mean you disregard them if they appear.
It is best to remove existing weeds when you spot them before they go out of control. Avoid the hassle of using herbicides. Pull the weeds while they are small and have not yet established their root system that is sure to ruin your ideal green carpet. Prevention is always better than cure!
