  4. Closing the Loop: One Objective • “Write an effective thesis statement” • Clear • Concise • Useful • Neither too broad nor too narrow • The key to a successful academic paper

  5. Outline of Plan • Ingl 3202, ultimate course in basic track • 250 students (of 545) • Pre-test • Intervention • Post-test

  6. Pre-Test • In-class writing • Students began learning in pre-requisite course • Difficulty of creating thesis statement increases

  7. Interventions • Teach definition • Locate in readings • Discuss parameters • Write their own in series of drafts

  8. Post-Test • Final formal paper of semester • Research papers, complex analysis of topics in literature

  9. Results • 42% success at pre-test • Intervention is successful • 76% at midpoint • Post test is pending

  10. Possible Actions Post-test results will vary • Same result • Higher scores • Lower scores Create Rubric for uniformity and consensus across sections (multi-section course)
