  1. Vocabulary 100 Years War- A war between England and France that was fought over the French crown. Joan of Arc- French peasant who lead the French to victory at the Battle of Orleans and was later burned at the stake for witchcraft. Nationalism- Extreme pride in one’s country.

  4. When did it take place? • 1337-1453 • Why did it start? • The King of France dies without a successor, England’s Edward III claimed the right to the French Throne • The war that followed raged on French soil for a little more than a century.

  5. The Battle of Crecy • The English introduced a new weapon, the Longbow. • The English demonstrated its power by annihilating a French force 3x its size. • 1/3 of the armored French Knights were killed. • The Longbow, not Chivalry won the day. • Mounted, heavy armored medieval knight was soon to become extinct.

Who was Joan of Arc? • A teenaged French peasant who felt moved by God to drive the English out of France. • She led the French to a victory at Orleans • After that victory Charles VII of France was crowned King • A year later she was captured by English allies and turned over to the church. • Joan was found guilty of heresy and burned at the stake • Although Charles owed his crown to Joan he did nothing to help her.

What was the Impact of the Hundred Years’ War • A feeling of nationalism existed in England and France • Power of French monarch increased • English suffered internal turmoil known as The War of the Roses. • Considered the end of the Middle Ages • Devotion to the church crumbled • The display of vast wealth, The Great Schism and plague discredited the Church • Chivalry died on the battlefield of Crecy • Crusades brought back knowledge
