  1. Chapter 1- The Nature of Science For the first page in your notebook, illustrate what you think science is!

How do we “do” science? • Scientific Method • State the problem • Gather information • Form a hypothesis/state the research question • Variables: dependent, independent • Constants and controls • Test the hypothesis • Analyze data • Draw conclusions • Bias-occurs when what the scientist expects changes how the results are viewed. • Complete the flip chart on scientific method in your notebook!

  3. Law vs. Theory –a theory can be used to explain a law! Theory Law Explanation of things or events based on knowledge gained from many observations and investigations. NOT a guess! CAN be modified! Examples: Big Bang A statement about what happens in nature that seems to be true all the time. They do NOT explain why. Examples: gravity

  4. Measure up! Precision Accuracy How closely measurements are to each other and how carefully measurement are made. Compares a measurement to the real or accepted values.

  5. Measurement-SI Units • Based on multiples of 10 • Standard is the kilogram kept in France! • Meter is base unit of length • Second is base unit for time • Kelvin is base unit for temperature

  10. Dimensional Analysis • A conversion factor is a ratio that is equal to one and is used to change one unit to another .

  11. Homework! • Find your favorite recipe. • Convert from English units to metric • Turn in both the English recipe and metric version!

Volume Mass • Volume-the amount of space occupied by an object • V=l x w x h • 1mL = 1 cm(cubed) • Create a density column in your notebook! • Mass- is a measurement of the quantity of matter in an object. • Density- is the mass per unit volume of a material • Measured in a derived unit: g/cm(cubed)

  13. Temperature • Celsius • 0, 100 • Body temp is 37 • Fahrenheit • 32, 212 • Body temp is 98.6 • The SI unit for temperature is Kelvin (K) • 0 is coldest possible temp also known as Absolute Zero. (-273 C!!) • Water boils at 373 K

  14. Graphs • A graph is a visual display of information or data • Line graph-can show any relationship where the dependent variable changes due to a change in independent variable. • Bar graph-comparing information • Circle graph-shows how some fixed quantity is broken down into parts.
