  3. SKIN’S BIOLOGY • Cells in the lowest layer of the epidermis (the outermost layer of skin) produce melanin, the pigment that gives skin and eyes their color. • The more melanin the skin has, the darker the skin appears. Produce Melanin

  4. UV-B • UV-A • UV-B rays cause sunburn, a red inflammation of the skin affecting the epidermis. Order of Use Influences of UV-A and UV-B on the Skin • UV-A rays penetrate into the dermis, eventually causing wrinkles and sagging.

SKIN CANCER • The most serious skin condition that you can develop from UV exposure is skin cancer. • Everyone, regardless of skin color, is at risk of skin cancer. • Skin cancer is curable. • Did you know, skin cancer can start in areas that have never been exposed to the sun because it spreads through the blood stream, so it can appear anywhere on the body. • Up to 90% of the visible changes commonly attributed to aging are caused by the sun.

  8. SUN PROTECTION Q: WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW Sun damage is cumulative The only safe tan is self tanning. Premature aging is due mainly to sun exposure. Q: HOW MUCH SUNSCREEN DO YOU NEED? WHEN DO YOU APPLY AND RE-APPLY? DO YOU NEED SUN PROTECTION EVERY DAY? • Apply one ounce (two tablespoons) of sunscreen to their entire body 30 minutes before going outside. • For application to the face only, apply a pearl-sized amount (when using a cream), and a quarter-sized amount (when using an emulsion). • Sun protection is to be worn daily. • Reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating

SUN PROTECTION • Look for one of these seals “Daily Use” or “Active Use” from the Skin Cancer Foundation on Shiseido sun products. • SPF is “Sun Protection Factor” – it refers to the number on the sun products.   20. Additional Tips for Sun Protection • Seek the shade, especially between 10 AM and 4 PM.
