Function of the Organs of the Male Reproductive System • Testicles: These produce and store millions of tiny sperm cells. They also produce hormones including testosterone. • Duct System: Semen transportation system (Semen is the fluid that contains sperm) • Accessory Glands: Provides the fluids that lubricate the duct system and nourish the sperm. • Penis: the organ through which semen and urine exit the body.
Why is part of the reproductive system outside the male body? • The testicles and part of the duct system are outside the body in a pouch called the scrotum • This bag of skin helps regulate the temperature of the testicles, which need to be kept cooler than the temperature inside the body to produce sperm. • When the body is cold, the scrotum shrinks and tightens to hold in body heat. • When the body is warm, it becomes larger and skin loosens to let go of extra heat
Male Body During Puberty • When a baby boy is born, he has all parts of this reproductive system in place, but it isn’t until puberty that he is able to reproduce. • Puberty usually begin between 9 and 15. • The pituitary gland, near the brain, produces a hormone telling the testicles to start producing testosterone. • The hormone causes boys to develop a deeper voice, bigger muscles, and body and facial hair. • This hormone also stimulates the production of sperm.
How does it happen? • While these stages may take longer for some males than others, they tend to occur in this order: • The scrotum and testes grow larger • The penis becomes longer • Hair begins to appear in the pubic area and later it grows on the face and underarms. • During this time, the male’s voice also deepens • Boys undergo a growth spurt during puberty as they reach their adult height and weight.
What are the Sperm? • A male who has reached puberty will produce millions of sperm everyday • Each sperm is only 1/600 of an inch • Each sperm is made of a head and a short tale. The head contains the genetic material and the tale works to propel the sperm. • If the sperm is able to reach the egg, through intercourse, the egg may become fertilized and develop into a baby.
When it’s time to see a Dr. or ask a Trusted Adult • Testicular trauma- Mild injury may cause severe pain, bruising, or swelling. If they testicles become twisted, cutting off blood supply, surgery may be needed • Varicocele: Abnormally swollen vein in the testicle. While usually not harmful, can damage testicle and decrease sperm production • Inguinal hernia: Intestine pushes through an abnormal opening or weakening of the abdominal wall and into the groin or scrotum. Can be corrected with surgery. • Inflammation of the Penis: Redness, itching, swelling and pain. Head of the penis is inflamed. May be bacterial or yeast infection.
