Founding History • Mission San Gabriel Arcángel was founded by Father Junipero Serra on September 8th 1771 • It is the 4th of the 21 missions • It is named after Gabriel, The Holy Prince of Archangels • The nickname of the mission is Pride of The Missions • Missionaries from San Gabriel guided the development Church of our Lady of the Angels at the pueblo de Los Angeles, founded in 1781.

Location • Located nine miles away from down town Los Angeles • San Gabriel sat astride three prominent trails • It is located at the intersection of Mission Boulevard and Junipéro Serra Avenue • The mission is found in the city of San Gabriel • Settlers, military expeditions, and travelers often stay at the mission

  4. Design / Layout The mission was built by the Indians Many parts of the mission were built of stone In the mission era the prominent door in the side wall of the church opened directly to El Camino Real The mission had many narrow pathways The mission was also made of adobe

Mission Life Native American Life Missionary Life Rang bells to signal what to do They go to mass to pray Joined the Spanish at age 16 Taught neophyte men how to raise cattle Taught neophyte women new skills of weaving • Got up at sunrise • Ate atolé at breakfast • Went to sleep when work was done • Children had even did work too • The men grew onions , corn, wheat, garlic, tomatoes , garlic, tomatoes, barley, lentils, chile, and melons.

  6. Mission Life Today The mission is very active and busy Many people come there This mission is a Roman Catholic Church

  7. Take a Stand The mission system started in 1769 and ended in 1834. The Spanish missionaries wanted to spread Christianity around California, so the Native Americans had to forget their culture .First , the Native Americans had to follow a strict schedule by waking up when the bells rang. They had to believe in Christianity otherwise the Native Americans were severely punished. Lastly , the Native Americans were infected with many deadly diseases.
