  2. What Do We Know? • By Homer • Blind Poet – his job was to tell stories • What stories are popular?

  3. What Do We Know? • Well, its about the Greeks • It’s a “National Epic” • AKA, it brings in many different Greek groups and their neighbors

  4. Remember – many of these figures were KNOWN either literally or by reputation by the people who were hearing the stories

  5. What’s Important? • Family, Family, Family • National Pride

  6. What’s Important • Personal Strength and Honor • The lives of those less than you

  7. What’s Important? • A Good Death

  8. Who are our Characters? • Odysseus – Obviously very important, but absent from the text – his absence leaves a “void” that other characters try and fill • Telemachus • Suitors

  9. Who are our Characters? • Penelope • Faithful wife • For the Greeks a woman’s place is in the home at the “hearth” • Weaving: perfect grieving activity

  10. Who are our Characters? • Telemachus • The Son • Trying to be a hero – without the father it is difficult • Also doesn’t know exactly HOW to go about heroism (again – Odysseus’ absence is huge)

  11. Who are our Characters? • Poseidon • Sets himself AGAINST Odysseus • The Sea is important to the Greeks, but also a good symbol of the chaos Nature can bring • Athena • Goddess of Wisdom • Wisdom/Intelligence seeks to put the world BACK together
