RECALLING: FACULTY: PURPOSE & MEMBERSHIP Mission Statement: To foster a (more) effective scientific environment at ESAC To give a united face to the scientific work Who constitute the Faculty: All active (i.e. publishing papers) research scientists at ESAC: ESA staff, RFs, Science Contractors and LAEFF researchers. There are now 90 in this category (but remember average time for science is only ~10%, so these are only a tiny fraction of that in ftes) Please HELP us track new members

  8. HISTORY • Proto-faculty May 11 2006 • Faculty established September 30 2006 • First Assembly May 11 2006 • Second Assembly October 19 2006 • Third Assembly March 29 2007 • Fourth Assembly July 05 2007 • Fifth Assembly November 15 2007 • Faculty Workshop Sept. 05-07 2007 • X-rays from Nearby Galaxies: 74 participants (12 internal) • 6 Jamborees (latest Nov. 15 '07 Tot.: 82 spoke/78+ bios on the web) • 13 Council meetings (minutes on web) • 5 Assemblies (VGs on web) • 1 Interfaculty Telecon with ESTEC Faculty Executive (Exec)

  10. FACULTY OPERATION • We need more proposals. We' re not spending our budget • new Solar System people haven’t really started to spend yet • Council meet ~1 per month to approve funding requests • All funded projects should finish with: • short written report of progress during visit • ideally: presentation of results (seminar) • eventual products (e.g. refereed papers etc.)

  11. FACULTY OPERATION - FUNDING Follow funding instructions at http://www.rssd.esa.int/index.php?project=ESACFACULTY&page=internal_index THREE STEPS: To start the process : Apply for Faculty funding (text proposal made to Council) email to: faculty_funds@sciops.esa.int After approval and 6 weeks before work starts : Submit Contract Application Form (1 pg. Word doc.) email to: Andy.Pollock@esa.int (cc: Leo.Metcalfe@sciops.esa.int) On receipt of contract in mail (or before – using the web form) : Submit Reimbursement Form (Microsoft Excel format) Signed paper form to: Leo Metcalfe and Andy Pollock)

  14. OFFICE SPACE • Plan to have one Visitor Office per building (A,B,C) • Will serve visitors to mission teams and also Faculty • With 3 offices in total we hope it will be enough • Paying for Faculty office-space could cost 33KEuro/year • Final agreements pending

  15. FACULTY WEB • Last time I wrote :==> • I’d appreciate a VOLUNTEER to help with the Web work !!?? • thank youNICKfor responding !!!

  16. RF ISSUES • Pool of interviewers for Research Fellow candidates: • LM asked for volunteers from among experienced ESA staff :==> • Matthias Ehle Andy Pollock • Matteo Guainazzi Maria Santos-Lleo • Peter Kretschmar • Erik Kuulkers • Patrick Martin • Leo Metcalfe • Luis Sanchez • Norbert Schartel • Next RF application deadline : January 21 2008 • Next 3rd. year contract application deadline : January 31 2008

  17. UPDATE ON FUNDED PROGRAMMES

  18. PROGRAMMES SUPPORTED http://www.rssd.esa.int/index.php?project=ESACFACULTY&page=internal_index

  19. Departmental Research Proposals

  20. Departmental Research Proposals • Sept.24 SCI-S and SCI-OA issued a Call for Research Proposals • Deadline October 8 - Scope: Left very broad. Any good Science • Funds available: Substantial (approximate amount reported at Assembly) • Departments asked Faculty to set up Scientific peer review panel • an ESTEC/ESAC Panel was appointed (names listed at Assembly) • 11 proposals received: Only 1 ESAC PI • Detectors/Instrumentation, Extra-Solar Planets, SSOs, Meteors, Plasma Physics, Data Analysis ... impressively technical • Faculty Panel reported by Nov.03 • Senior management discussed Nov.05 • Now they must allocate resources

  21. The Advisory Committee for Research

  22. Biennial Review • Every two years, our research output is reviewed by an Advisory Committee of senior scientists • We prepare the "Biennial Report" as input (remember the publications lists?) • They visit - usually ESTEC - hear presentations and talk to a sample of Science staff and RFs • They make recommendations, e.g. last time • start a Faculty • support a few 3rd. year RF extensions • have a visitor programme • ... sound familiar !!?? ... • Next visit Nov.22/23 @ ESTEC • Pedro G-L, Maria S-L. will give Sci. talks in presentation session • LM will go and be chair-like: Round Table with the Faculties • 3 RFs will go (Stefania, Nick, Luca): Round Table with the RFs • some of us will get a nice meal

  23. MISCELLANEOUS

  24. THINGS TO THINK ABOUT • 20% and 50% Science Posts • this was raised at the 3rd Assembly • subsequently Pedro Garcia-Lario agreed to set up a small Commission within the Faculty to prepare a case, including a proposed method of assessment of research performance, for consideration by the Faculty (both ESAC and ESTEC). If approved by the Faculty it would be presented to ESA management. Over to Pedro ...

  25. THINGS TO THINK ABOUT • After the jamborees: Opportunities to collaborate ?? • think I said it last time: We should compile a list of internal collaborations • also, consider to flick through the research profiles of Faculty members • listed under “ESAC Faculty Jamborees” at :==> • http://www.rssd.esa.int/index.php?project=ESACFACULTY&page=events_index • It can be very surprising, with the number we now have, how many overlaps you find!! • please notify me (short email is fine) of any existing or new collaborations • in case you are involved, especially centrally, in significant external • collaborations I’d appreciate knowing that too

  26. THINGS TO THINK ABOUT Evaluation of Faculty success: • will be coming back for status reports on promised outputs from funding • has the Faculty helped you to do research. Unfortunately perhaps, this tends to mean "is your name on more papers"!? • by middle of next year we should be seeing real impacts! • I think that e.g. Workshops and general interaction with and visibility to the Community is also important, especially where it increases their involvement in the missions • I’d be glad to see other criteria enumerated.

  27. KEEPING YOUR PROMISES Did you sell your soul for Faculty money !!?? Someone wants to talk to you! Matteo Guainazzi is ... The Faculty Terminator
