  5. RECALLING: FACULTY: PURPOSE & MEMBERSHIP Prime Directive:DO SCIENCE Mission Statement: To foster a (more) effective scientific environment at ESAC. To give a united face to the scientific work Who constitute the Faculty: All active (i.e. publishing papers) research scientists at ESAC: ESA staff, RFs, Science Contractors and LAEFF researchers

  6. CALENDAR • Proto-faculty May 11 2006 • Established September 30 2006 • First Assembly May 11 2006 • Second Assembly October 19 2006 • Third Assembly March 29 2007 • 5 Jamborees (latest Jan. 25. Tot.: 77 spoke/70 bios on the web) • 2 remote members participated by pre-delivered video • 9 Council meetings (minutes on web) • 1 Interfaculty Telecon with ESTEC Faculty Executive (Exec) • 1 Presentation to ASTROCAM consortium at UCM meeting • Help us track new members (8 already for Jamboree #6)

FACULTY OPERATION • In first months have focused on getting funds flowing • Council meet ~1/month to approve funding requests • All funded projects finish with: • short written report of progress during visit • Ideally: presentation of results (seminar) • eventual products (e.g. refereed papers etc.)

FACULTY OPERATION - FUNDING Follow funding instructions at http://www.rssd.esa.int/index.php?project=ESAC_FACULTY&page=internal_index THREE STEPS: To start the process : Apply for Faculty funding (text proposal made to Council) email to: faculty_funds@sciops.esa.int After approval and 6 weeks before work starts : Submit Contract Application Form (1 pg. Word doc.) email to: Andy.Pollock@esa.int (cc: Leo.Metcalfe@sciops.esa.int) On receipt of contract in mail (or before – using the web form) : Submit Reimbursement Form (Microsoft Excel format) Signed paper form: Faxed to Clare Bingham (ESTEC) (cc: Andy Pollock)

Inter-Faculty issues • Research evaluation of staff • both faculty committees felt strongly that this has to be made work within the Annual Assessment exercise • 3rd. Year for RFs • established joint review board ESTEC/ESAC (4 persons) • allocated two 3rd. Year contracts • next call ~July 2007 • Biennial Report inputs • Again – coordinated input from LM and Matt Taylor
