  2. Washington’s Cabinet John Adams – Vice President Thomas Jefferson – Secretary of State Alexander Hamilton – Secretary of the Treasury Henry Knox- Secretary of War Edmund Randolph- Attorney General

  3. Domestic Policy: How the POTUS deals with problems here in the U.S. Biggest Domestic Policy Problem for GW: The National Debt! 81.5 Million This was a job for: Alexander Hamilton!

  4. Washington’s Foreign Policy The French Revolution Question: Do we help? If so… WHO Do we help? Problem: King Louis XVI is killed, Britain (and other countries) declare war on France….

  5. Jefferson says: Let’s help France! They were our ally! They are fighting for Democracy! Hamilton says: Let’s help Britain! The French are going CRAZY!!! Washington’s Decision: The Neutrality Proclamation We will help NEITHER!

  6. Problem: When we trade with France, Britain attacks our ships! What should we do about that??? Attack Britain? Stop trading with France? Send John Jay to Britain to solve this problem peacefully.

  7. Result: “Jay’s Treaty” Britain agreed to pay for the ships they destroyed – But said they would NOT stop attacking U.S. ships.

  8. Groups of people that share similar political views and work together to get members elected to office Political Parties The first political parties: Supporters of Thomas Jefferson formed: The Democratic-Republican Party Supporters of Alexander Hamilton formed: The Federalist Party
