  10. T4L 2008 –take back program Lenovo have sent out 4 emails on the takeback program, asking for the schools to email their requirement so that a schedule can be created. To date, less than 10% of schools have responded, and the deadline has been extended twice to accommodate. Lenovo have stated to the schools that they would not be in a position to respond to each enquiry until the schedule is created. The next scheduled communication was during the week of March 17. Lenovo will extend the deadline again to April 1. After this date, any outstanding takeback for that school will be forfeited and they will have to execute takeback using their next entitlement.

  11. Connected Classrooms • The Connected Classrooms Program consists of 3 key projects: Network Bandwidth Project Learning Tools Project Interactive Classrooms Project • In total these projects will see the investment of $158 million over the next 4 years http://www.cli.nsw.edu.au/cli/news/index/connected.shtm

  12. Connected Classrooms • Sydney Region has nominated the first 20 schools to receive an “interactive” classroom. • 40 schools from Sydney Region are to be nominated for their installation in semester 2 2008. • Sydney Region will be advising schools of their nominations in coming weeks.

  13. Number:  DN/08/00076 Issued: 10 March 2008 INTERACTIVE WHITEBOARDS COST SAVINGS ON CONTRACT FROM APRIL 2008 There is great interest in the Connected Classrooms Program and particularly the acquisition of interactive whiteboards (IWBs) in schools.  As the school year marches on I am aware of the significant growing demand from schools to purchase IWBs. The current situation is that the tender has closed, analysis is well under way and the IWB Management Committee is in the process of assessing the information received from which to make a recommendation.  Early indications are that there should be a genuine improvement in the price of the product and associated service.  The Management Committee is anticipating finalising its recommendation by the end of this month which will enable schools to purchase whiteboards at greatly reduced prices as from April 2008. Accordingly, our strong advice is to await an outcome from the current tender process.  Advice on the contract will be published through InPrincipal as soon as the contract has been executed.  Your continued assistance in waiting for the release of this contract is appreciated. PAUL HOPKINS Chief Procurement Officer

  15. Intel Classmate project This project involves Hebersham PS in Western Sydney region together with Clemton Park PS from Sydney Region. it's Intel's answer to the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project happening in several disadvantaged countries over the world. Intel's product (as well as being used in third world countries) is being trialed in developed countries as well.  It's targeted at 5 to 14 year olds, but in both our project schools, they will be exclusively used, on a one-to-one basis with Stage 2 (years 3 and 4 students). http://www.classmatepc.com

  16. Employer communication devices – staff use policy 3.3. Economic Use Employees are required to use the most economical and efficient means of communication when using departmental communication devices. Employees should keep short any communication which is time charged; this applies equally to calls made from standard telephones as well as calls from mobile telephones. To reduce unnecessary power consumption of computer equipment, employees should completely shut down their workstation before leaving work for the weekend. Computer monitors still consume some electricity in standby mode. To save power, monitors should be turned off overnight. • https://detwww.det.nsw.edu.au/policies/staff/ethical_behav/comm_dev/PD20020024_i.shtml

  17. Annual greenhouse gas emissions and electricity consumption for PCs and laptops

  18. “A single computer running 24 hours a day for a year consumes around 1,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity, the generation of which produces more than one tonne of carbon dioxide. At a rate of $0.14 per kWh, it costs more than $140 per year to run that computer”. On average, office computers are only used for about eight hours each day. Therefore, the cost of running the computer, its power consumption and the carbon dioxide produced in generating that power can be substantially reduced by simply switching the computer off at the end of each day.

  19. ITD’s New Website • Phase 1 of ITD’s new website has just been published on the DET intranet. • A key feature of the new website is the prominent display of news, alerts, notifications and updates that more effectively communicate important and interesting items to the user community. The display will provide a continuous flow of the latest ICT-related information. • Also new to the site are: • a space for the provision of up-to-date information on ITD projects; • streamlined access to ICT standards documentation; • detailed information from the ITD Services Catalogue. • https://detwww.det.nsw.edu.au/it/
