  5. Why is Phonological Awareness Important? Reading does not come easily to 40% of all children. Most of these children simply lack a skill that can be taught to them: Phonological Awareness! (Vellutino & Scanlon, 1987)

  16. Onset-Rime Onset-Rime The term onset is the consonant sound or sounds found in the beginning of a syllable in a one-syllable word. The term rime means the vowel and all other consonant sounds that follow the onset within a one-syllable word.
