  1. FIGURACaratteristiche distintive della cellula staminale. Le cellule staminali hanno due caratteristiche essenziali: la capacità di differenziarsi in una grande varietà di tipi cellulari maturi e la capacità di autorinnovamento. Fattori intrinseci associati con l’autorinnovamento comprendono l’espressione di Bmi-1, Gfi-1, PTEN, STAT5, Tel/Atv6, p21, MCL-1, Mel-18, RAE28 e HoxB4. I segnali estrinseci per l’autorinnovamento comprendono Notch,Wnt, SHH e Tie2/Ang-1. In studi sulle cellule di topo si è visto che le cellule staminali ematopoietiche esprimono le seguenti molecole di superficie: CD34, Thy-1 (CD90), il recettore di c-Kit (CD117), CD133, CD164 e c-Mpl (CD110, noto anche come recettore della trombopoietina).
