  2. Introduction You cannot predict when an accident is going to happen. It can happen anywhere and at anytime and when you least expect it. Hence, it is advisable to remain vigilant and stay prepared at all times, particularly when you are driving on a busy road. These tips may be of benefit in avoiding an accident.

  3. Focus on the road This is the most obvious thing to do but it isn’t always done and failure to focus on the road can lead to accidents. Always keep your eyes on the road while you are at the wheel but also make yourself aware of the hazards around you. Ensure that you eliminate potential distractions inside your vehicle. Remember, your car’s not the place for multi-tasking. So just “drive” in the knowledge that this will increase your chances of avoiding an accident.

  4. Avoid using mobile phones The use of mobile phones is a distraction and can lead to accidents. Even hands-free models aren’t considered to be safe. Ensure you place your phone out of reach and ensure you concentrate on the road at all times. It is illegal in the UK to use a mobile phone when driving.

  5. DO NOT drive intoxicated Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol is one of the major causes of accidents and deaths on the roads. DO NOT drink and drive. DO NOT take drugs and drive. Drink & Drugs & Driving do not mix.

  6. Stay within the speed limit Different road categories have different speed limits. You should always ensure you know the speed limit of the road. Respect the speed limit on all roads and you will help to reduce the risk of having or being the cause of an accident.

  7. Report hostile drivers As soon as you see someone driving aggressively on the road, take appropriate measures immediately by distancing your vehicle from the offending vehicle. Slow down and bring your vehicle to a halt and note the offending vehicle’s registration number. Report the incident to the police as soon as possible.

  8. Follow highway rules Last but not least, always follow highway rules and regulations. Be courteous to other road users and stay within the law at all times. Do not break highway rules or regulations through a lack of patience or because of frustration. The rules and regulations of the highway are there to protect you and other road users. Act as a responsible road user at all times.
