  1. Immune System April 2010

  2. Objectives • SWBAT explain the cause of infectious disease and identify the organisms that cause diseases • SWBAT describe how pathogens enter the body

  3. Do Now: • Brainstorm a list of familiar diseases. • divide list into those that you think can be spread from one person to another and those that can’t.

  4. Activity Shake hands with three people. Each person shakes with three more, and so on How does the apple skin protect it?

  5. Disease and pathogens • Organisms that cause disease are called pathogens • Infectious disease can be spread from one organism to another

  6. Four Pathogens • Bacteria – one celled organisms. Ex. Strep, ear infections, pneumonia • Virus- tiny particles which cannot reproduce on their own. Must live in another cell – living or not living questionable. Cells damaged, ex cold and flu. Chicken pox and aids • Fungi – molds yeasts etc – athletes foot, yeast infection thrush • Protists- protists cause malaria

  7. Bacteria – one celled organisms. Ex. Strep, ear infections, pneumonia

  8. Virus- tiny particles which cannot reproduce on their own. Must live in another cell – living or not living questionable. Cells damaged, ex cold and flu. Chicken pox and aids

  9. Fungi – molds yeasts etc – athletes foot, yeast infection thrush

  10. How diseases spread You can get pathogens from • other people • contaminated objects • animal or insect bite • Environment • www.kidshealth.org

  11. Objective: SWBAT describe how the body defends itself against pathogensDo Now: • Copy Homework: Finish p 170-176 questions (per 7) Finish immune dialogue Test Friday – Reproductive, Immune, Endocrine systems • Hand in old work p 170-176 questions

  12. Objective: SWBAT describe how the body defends itself against pathogens Level 1 Response: Keep out! Most pathogens are trapped on the way into the body by the Skin breathing passages mouth stomach tears

  13. Objective: SWBAT describe how the body defends itself against pathogens Level 2 response: Inflammatory Response Fluid and blood cells leak from blood vessels into nearby tissues. The white blood cells then fight the pathogens. • Phagocytes are a type of white blood cell that engulfs or eats pathogens. They are NOT specific to the type of pathogen. • As blood leaks into the area it gets red and hot and swollen. Inflammation – “flamed” • Fever

  14. Objective: SWBAT describe how the body defends itself against pathogens Level 3 Response: Immune response Cells can distinguish between different kinds of pathogens and respond with a targeted cell. Lymphocytes - white blood cells which are specific to pathogen T-cells: Tag and identify pathogen and call for help. Also destroy infected body cells B-cells: Make antiBodies which fit to specific antigen and make virus clump up to be destroyed by phagocytes

  15. Objective: SWBAT describe how the body defends itself against pathogens Level 3 Response: Immune response Memory cells: remember and recognize pathogen to make immune response for next time invader comes around. • www.Brainpop.com • War game • http://www.immunedisease.com/patients-and-families/help-and-support/education/games/gammagard-liquid-game.htmlwar game 2
