Government! • The government is what makes our every day decisions for us. • The government decides the rules and regulations which we must follow everyday in society.
Why are rules important? • Rules are important because without them our society could not function properly. • There are rules everywhere and everyday, we are affected by all of these rules and regulations.
Legal and Non-legal Rules: • Many people in society and in institutions make rules and regulations. • Some of these rules however are non-legal rules. • For example if you arrive late for school you may be punished or given a detention. This is a non-legal rule • However stealing from a supermarket is a legal rule.
What are laws? • Laws are legal rules which are made by people called law-makers. • We choose who is able to make our laws, through election. • The people who make laws are: • Parliaments • People who work on behalf of parliaments e.g local councils • And the courts
Why do we need laws? • We need laws to: • Protect us from harm. • Help us punish people who do harm us or break the law. • Tell us what we can or cannot do. • Laws protect our rights, so we are not discriminated against.
