  5. Our Focus: Language Barriers Refugees struggle to communicate with people in America which makes them feel alone and misunderstood

  6. English Language Education Program (ELEP) We welcome any refugees who need to improve their English reading, writing, and speaking skills

  7. ELEP Description • We will have volunteers conduct basic English classes focusing on reading, writing, and speaking English • To gain volunteers we will advertise with flyers around UNCC, local churches, and public facilities that agree to participate • To gain funding the advertisement will also ask for donations

  8. How would our idea work? • On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday nights we will hold English classes at 8:00 pm at local churches: • Christ United Methodist Church • Province Road Church of Christ • Throne of Christ • Volunteers will pick refugees up from their homes and take them home after the classes

  9. Program Needs • English textbooks • People who are bilingual to communicate with the refugees and to teach them • Pens, pencils, and paper • Facility: local churches to hold classes • Transportation for the refugees

  12. Opportunities and Benefits for Volunteers • Volunteers will become more culturally experienced • Learn languages from the refugees • Friendships with the refugees • Leadership experience

  13. Questions and Challenges • Can we afford to buy textbooks? • Can we afford to transport the refugees? • Do we have time 3 nights a week to conduct the classes? • Will we have enough volunteers? • How long will it take the refugees to learn English?
