  1. Sanctuary Churches

  2. Sanctuary Cities • “Sanctuary cities” were mentioned in last year’s presidential election • These are cities that have decided to limit their cooperation in the enforcement of federal immigration law; illegals will not be actively arrested or prosecuted in these cities

  3. Sanctuary Cities • Prohibit the asking of questions about immigration status • Refusing to detain illegal law-breakers beyond their release date • There are currently about 300 sanctuary jurisdictions (city, county, state) … “We are a welcoming city”

  4. Sanctuary Cities • More crime committed with no real punishment • More economic burdens with no fair solutions • More contradictory ideologies (including radical Islam) with no real concern

  5. Sanctuary for the Sinful • Sanctuary nations (Josh. 7) • Sanctuary cities (Zeph. 3:1; Lk. 19:41-45; Mt. 24:37-39) • Sanctuary marriages (Acts 5) • Sanctuary churches (1 Cor. 5; Rev. 2)

  6. Why Sanctuary Churches? • Don’t want to lose numbers • Don’t want to be intolerant / negative • Don’t want to go against family or friends (Mt. 10:37) • Don’t want to do the unpleasant thing (Heb. 12:11)

  7. Why Sanctuary Churches? • Don’t want to uphold punishment (Num. 16:41) • Don’t want to identify sin as sin • Don’t ask don’t tell policy

  8. What About Us? • Everyone is welcome to come hear the truth; but not everyone can be in fellowship without obeying God’s word • Everyone will be supported in their Christian living; but not everyone will be condoned in their sinful behavior

  9. What About the Unrepentant? • We are to avoid (Mt. 18:15-17) • We are to turn away (Rom. 16:17) • We are to put away (1 Cor. 5:13) • We are to withdraw (2 Thess. 3:6) • We are to refuse (Tit. 3:9) • We are to give no greeting (2 Jn. 11)

  10. What Will Happen? • The local church will be in violation of God’s word • The local church will be negatively impacted by the sinful influence of its members • The local church will lose its influence (light) in the community

  11. What Will Happen? • The local church will cease to be accepted by Jesus (Rev. 2-3) • Let’s not be a sanctuary church, let’s be a sanctified church!
