  1. Human Body Systems Lesson 14 Terms and Definitions

  2. Video • Watch discovery education • Introduction to the circulatory system

  3. The Circulatory System Purpose – transport nutrients, oxygen, CO2, water, and other materials throughout the body. http://www.wv-hsta.org/summer_2003/biomed/teachers/exercise_physiology/exercise_physiology/images/circulatory_system.gif

  4. Q: What does the heart do?

  5. Heart • Main organ of the circulatory system • Located between the lungs • Heart is a pump • One of the strongest Muscles in the body http://www.mynews.in/News/dailyimage/news/Heart--300--1.png

  6. Pericardium • Pericardium – double walled sac that surrounds, protects, and anchors the heart. http://www.wired.com/images/article/full/2007/09/pericardium_580x.jpg

  7. Chambers? • Heart is divided into 4 chambers… • Top two chambers = atria (left and right) • Bottom two chambers = ventricles (left and right)

  8. chambers NOTE: Your right and left NOT the left and right on the paper!!! http://www.starsandseas.com/SAS_Images/SAS_Physiol_Images/SAS%20cardiopics/heart_chambers.jpg

  9. Sinoatrial Node • Also known as the S-A Node • Pacemaker of the heart • Responsible for the maintaining the beat and rhythm of the heart. • Avg. resting adult 70 beats per minute (BPM).

  10. Pumps of the heart… • Two pumps (right and left). • Pulmonary circulation (right side) – receives blood from the body and circulates it to the lungs. • Systemic circulation (left side) – receives blood from the lungs and circulates it to the rest of the body.

  11. The sound of a heart beat… • “LUB-DUB” – a two part beat. • “LUB” = the closing of the valves between the atria and ventricles • “DUB” = the closing of the valves between the ventricles and the outgoing arteries

  12. “DUB” “LUB” http://www.starsandseas.com/SAS_Images/SAS_Physiol_Images/SAS%20cardiopics/heart_chambers.jpg

  13. Blood Colors • Bright RED – Oxygen Rich (leaving the lungs headed to the cells) • Blue – Carbon Dioxide Rich (leaving the cells headed back to the lungs)

  14. Closed Circulatory System • Closed Circulatory System – Blood stays confined within the blood vessels.

  15. Video • Discovery Education • The heart
