  3. Welcome! Gay E. Melnick, Principal Cinthea Thurman, Assistant Principal Theresa Robinson, Staff Development Teacher Jan Riley, Consulting Principal Sandy Young, PTA President

  4. More about Mrs. Melnick….. 25 Years of Experience in Education: Elementary and Middle School Teacher, High School Testing Coordinator, Elem. School Counselor, College Professor/Student Teaching Supervisor, Scholastic Consultant, Assistant Principal, and Principal Intern

  5. More about Mrs. Melnick….. Married to Richard Melnick for 23 years. Two sons, Brett and Kyle, ages 18 and 16. Brett just graduated from Sherwood High School and will be attending Ohio University in the fall. Kyle is in Grade 11 at Sherwood HS. She enjoys traveling, kayaking, sailing, gardening, and spending time with her family.

  7. How will Mrs. Melnick model these core values? Make decisions based upon what is best for all children. Committed to building positive relationships with students, staff, and parents. Expect relevant and rigorous instruction Be accessible and visible Visit classrooms/lunch room/recess on a daily basis Provide constructive feedback Be respectful and honest Model effective communication skills Get to know all children by name Ensure that school safety protocols are followed

SummerPlanning 2012 Building relationships with staff and parents Meeting with Instructional Leadership Team (ILT) Revising our vision and mission statements Developing the master schedule Preparing class lists Hiring new staff Analyzing school/student data Reviewing school policies Attending trainings on Curriculum 2.0 (Gr. K-3)

  9. Summer Planning continued…. Considering new mascot/motto Cleaning the building, new carpet in office, media center, computer lab Preparing for Technology Modernization Adhering to all guidelines from recent safety inspection Preparing for Pre-Service and Open House

  10. Flower Valley Mission Statement We are a diverse team of students, staff and parents committed to creating a peaceful academic environment. We achieve this by respecting differences and encouraging individuals to be active participants in the learning process. We work together as a community by utilizing research based strategies to foster academic excellence and equitable practices

  11. Flower Valley Vision Statement We inspire children to become critical thinkers who are imaginative, adaptable, and collaborative, We strive to cultivate peaceful, life-long learners who thrive in a global society

Flower Valley MSA Results 2011-2012 School Year Great news….We met the Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) targets in both reading and math in all subgroups: In reading, 90.7% of our students scored proficient In math, 89.4% scored proficient. Our focus for the 2012-13 school year will be reading, all subgroups, with particular attention to Special Education and FARMS students.

  13. 2012-13 School Organization • 465 students in Grades K-5, including two special education programs, Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHOH) and Emotional Disabilities (ED) • Based on current enrollment data, we are planning for the following: • 3 sections of Grades K, 1, 3, 4 • 4 sections of Grade 2 • 2 sections of Grade 5 • 1 Grade 4/5 combination class. • *This plan could change if enrollment changes.

  14. Mascot/Motto….Our goal is to have one mascot and one motto. All students will vote for their favorite during first week of school. Options so far……. Flower Valley Bullfrogs or Frogs…Leaping into the Future Flower Valley Fireflies……Lighting the Way Flower Valley Falcons……Soaring to New Heights Email me with any other ideas….

  16. Save these Dates! Kindergarten Parent Meeting, 8/23, at 7 p.m. Open House, 8/24, from 2-3:30 p.m. First Day of School, 8/27, School starts at 8:50 a.m. Grandparent’s Day, 9/7, from 9:30-11 a.m. PTA Back to School Picnic, 9/7, at 7 p.m.
