  1. The Carrot or the Stick?[hint: It’s not the stick…]

  2. Sometimes people have misperceptions about what motivation is, or they deliberately choose to operate from a point of demotivation

  3. COMING SOON TO A COMPANY NEAR YOU

  4. Example: the “It could be worse” technique

  5. Negative reinforcement is a form of punishment and a means to control, ~ it is not motivation Negative reinforcement is designed to extinguish behavior, not motivate it

  6. Punishment is an overt use of coercive power with the intent to put the employee in a position of submission

  7. What are the outcomes when a manager continually chooses to use punishment or coercive means with employees?

  8. Experienced powerlessness [fallacy: ees will be satisfied with less] • Sense of futile fate and resignation [fallacy: ees become more loyal to the firm] • Low self-esteem [fallacy: the need for recognition is eliminated; ees will be more ‘manageable’] • Self-doubt [fallacy: ees will work harder to salvage identities]

  9. There is a high price to pay for using punishment with employees • Submissive, fearful employees with low sense of esteem, power & identity end up being highly ineffective ~ plus, eventually they will end up slashing your tires in the parking lot

  10. When is the time to use coercive means with employees? They are engaging in behavior that is destructive to them, or to others + You have exhausted other means + The employee is expendable
