DAILY QUESTION #1 • Write your first and last name on both sides of popsicle stick with your period on the ends. • In one sentence, define the word biology. • What are 3 over all goals you have for this year? • (remember the definition of insanity) What do you want to do different this year? • List 2 professions you might be interested in doing when you “grow up”  THEN grab the papers on the front desk, one of each. 3 hole punch them both. • Pick 3 traits from people/teachers that you have decided you NEVER want to be like. • Rank these classes from your most to least favorite: math, science, history, english, foreign language. • Take out a piece of paper, tear it in half (hamburger style) and share the other half with someone else. Set it aside.

  8. Notebook cover/Surveys • You will need to create a cover for your notebook • You will also need to do 2 different learning styles surveys. • ALL THE DIRECTIONS ARE ONLINE!!!! • If you don’t have a computer, come here at break or lunch, or to another teacher, friends house or library!

Day 4 C.O. – SW understand the importance of observations in scientific inquiry.L.O.- SW take notes and make inferences on a person based off of their shoe. • Take out your half sheet of paper that was labeled “Shoe Lab”. • Write “Observation 1” on the first line. Find someone’s foot that is AT LEAST 10 feet away from you. Don’t make it obvious, nor tell them you are using them, its part of the lab. Hopefully you pick someone you don’t already know. • Write down 10 or more observations about that foot/shoe from where you are sitting. You cannot get out of your seat to get a closer look. • Make a quick sketch of the shoe exactly where it is, even the obstructions. Try to be as detailed as you are able in the sketch and observations.

Skip two pages then label that page, 1 in the bottom right hand corner. EVERY notebook check will have points for your Table of Contents. If it is not complete viz. there are no page numbers, no titles, or missing assignments; you will NOT receive full credit. You do not need to memorize EVERYTHING in life. BUT, you do need to know where to find it!

Create a bumper sticker telling people your “Famous Last Words” What would be the last thing you would say, or the one thing you would hope people would know/hear from you if it was the only/last thing they heard. Please no profanity, drug/alcohol references. This will be on the top half of page “0” (next to page 1) Needs to have a title (5 points), 4 colors (5 points), and a description (5 points)

  21. Science = Observation Sir Isaac Newton Newton was a scientist in the 1600’s. The story goes that one day while sitting in his orchard drinking tea, an apple fell and hit him on the head. From that point he studied why, he observed. He concluded that the moon, the earth and literally everything was affected by gravity. Gravity was a puller. The stronger the pull, the more gravity. Have you ever asked why? Have you ever taken anything apart?

The Nature of Science Main Idea: How do we “do” science? • Scientists observe. • Sometimes your observations/assumptions/hypothesis could be false, or not what you expected, but does that make your “experiment” a failure? • Many scientists have had revolutionary breakthroughs because of something in their experiment that they did not account for…. • For example….

  24. Science is Observation Scientists often use “petri dishes” to, grow, or try to kill certain bacteria in an isolated environment. Here you can see a lab assistant holding a petri dish with bacteria growing in it. AlexanderFleming

  25. Alexander Fleming BONUS! One day while he was working on some petri dishes (again) he had a runny nose and it dripped (NASTY) into the dish. He then noticed that it killed the bacteria he was working on! Thus, Dr. Bonehead Fleming found another cure by pure luck! Natural tears and nasal mucus that helped the body fight germs. LYSOZOMES!! Sound familiar? LYSOL is the derived from that concept.

  26. The Nature of Science Main Idea: How do we “do” science? • Scientists test results • Scientists have to ensure that their finding was not pure bonehead luck but actual retraceable steps and experiments. Scientists repeat experiments to ensure their accuracy.

The Nature of Science Main Idea: How do we “do” science? • Scientists investigate • Through OBSERVATIONS, scientists formulate and answer questions about how things work. • Remember the assumptions or HYPOTHESIS we came up with about the person who wore the shoes? Scientists investigate, scientists ask questions. • Scientists plan experiments • Before you can experiment you have to plan what you are experimenting. • You must state exactly what you are going to test in order for someone else to copy it exactly and prove if it works.

  28. PROVE IT! Science = Observation Science tests what we can see… So lets see what you see….. Many professions rely on their ability to observe… Different points of view/emotions will give produce observations.

  29. Shoe Lab Observation 1: Find a shoe on the other side of the room and write 5 things about that shoe from where you sit, include a brief sketch of what you see from where you sit. Observation 2: Look again, what 3 things can you infer about the person wearing that shoe? Observation 3: Look AGAIN! What 3 other judgments/inferences can you make about that person based on their shoe whether you are right or wrong? Sometimes “observations” aren’t just looking. What decisions or judgments could you make just by looking at your shoes? Name 4 professions you think observations would be a critical skill to have?

  30. Have your cover/surveys out for me to check. You lose 5 points each day they are late. • Number pages 1-50 by MONDAY! (DON’T NUMBER YOUR DQ’s!) REMEMBER, your notebook should be in this order: • 1. notebook cover • 2. web surveys (both) • 3. syllabus • 4. 2 table of contents pages • 5. THEN page #1. • We will get our textbooks from the Library and then do a group activity.

Paper Tower (page 2!) • On page “2” of your notebook, label it “PAPER TOWER”. • Using the scientific method (grab a chart if you need it), COMPLETE each step thoroughly to create a paper tower that AT LEAST 80 cm tall. With 1 piece of computer paper and 20 cm of tape. THAT’S IT! • Paper tower = 20 points: • 80-85cm – 14 pts; 86-90 – 16 pts; 91-95 cm – 18 pts; 96-100cm – 19 pts; 100cm+ 20 • Free standing (indefinitely) = 10 pts, stands for 2-5 sec – 5 pts, 10 sec – 7 pts, 15 sec - 8 pts, 20+ sec – 9 pts. • You MUST include and write down each step of the scientific method on page 2!

Why would it be important to number your steps as a scientist? Why would it be important to include the exact materials and measurements used in an experiment? Why would you only want to test 1 variable at a time in an experiment?

Describe the steps of the Scientific Method C.O. – SW understand essential skills that scientists need to be successful.
