  2. Chapter 1: Demographics • Located in the southern tip of Africa • 29° 00'S and 24° 00'E • Physical characteristics: rivers, plateau, rocky bridges and rainfall at 75 in. a year. For this country, cold summers are normal. • Effects: caused food shortages • 3 capitals which are Cape-Town, Pretoria, and Bloemfontein. • 2010Population: 49,109,107 • 2011 Population: 49,004,031 • Today population: 48,810,427. • Projected population: Not sure

DemographicsContinued • Ethnic Groups: Black African 79%, White 9.6%, colored 8.9%, Indian/Asian 2.5%. • Infant morality rate: 43.2 deaths/1,000 live births • Birth rate: 19.48 births/1,000 population • Life expectancy: 49.33 years -Males: 50.24 yrs. -Females : 48.39 yrs. • Literacy rate: age 15 & over can read and write . - Total:86.4% • Males: 87% • Females: 85.7% • Gross national product: $224 billion

  4. In south Africa, they are many environment problems occurring. • Lack of water -The rainfall numbers have been less than 80% of normal. • Pollution -There are a lot of polluted waters. • Farming -Three hundred to four hundred million tons of soil per year are lost. ENVORONMENTAL PROBLEMS

  7. How has the revolutions/civil war changes the government of the county? Some of the civil war changed the government by teaching their next generation of children to learn form the mistakes from South Africa past and to be treated equally so that votes and leaders can treat the people right. The changes I read up on were good changes. Government Continued

  8. Free market capitalist economic system. Mining Industry: South Africa is the worlds biggest producer of platinum, and one of the leading producers of gold, diamonds, base metals and coals.   9. Textile Industry:  Since 1994, over $1,000,000,000 has been spent on upgrading and modernizing south Africa's textile, clothing, and foot wear industries. Chemicals: South Africa's chemical industry, including fuel and plastics fabrication as well as pharmaceuticals, is the largest of its kind in africa, and has been identified by the government as key driver of economic growth. World War 1 continued • 1914 -Nationalist Party formed under leadership of General Hertzog. -August, World War I begins. -Revolt by anti-war Afrikaner nationalists -African miners strike at the Van Rhyn Deep mines in a bid to redress some of their grievances. • 1916 -The Durban & District Native Football Association is established. -The Beaumont Commission tours The Union of South Africa, trying to find areas that could be incorporated into the reserves, without disturbing white farming.

  19. There are many different problems occurring in South Africa with crime, education and environment. Education: The problem is that the kids are out of control and appreantly the parents don’t care. Unfortunately, the class is divided between the whites and blacks. Some school charge poor black parents for their children’s education. South Africa approziamently spends about 6% of their GDP on their education. There is a lot of violence going on at school including rape. Chapter 7: The Cold War

  22. Education -The problem is that the kids are out of control and apparently the parents don’t care. Unfortunately, the class is divided between the whites and blacks. There is a lot of violence going on at school including rape. Problems

  23. Crime -Crime in S. Africa just wont seem to go away. There is a lot of violence going down like rape, murder, and robbery. There was more than 100 policemen that were killed on duty last year. Only about 1 in 10 rapes are thought to be reported. People are to afraid to say anything. The murders are outrages; some gangs kill people for their mobile phones. Some people are scared to even walk alone in the dark, they feel unsafe. Problems
