Advice from Awardees • Don’t judge an agency’s interests by its “name ” • Understand agency’s mission & needs • Get to know your agency Program Manager • Read solicitation and follow instructions • Don’t depend solely on SBIR funding • Don’t go it alone - use support systems • Have an outcome • Win or lose - get and review evaluations • Be PERSISTENT

  10. DoD SBIR/STTR Historical “Success” Rates Historically… • 16% of DoD SBIR/STTR Phase I proposals are awarded • 50% of Phase I awards receive a Phase II. • 55% of Phase II awards commercialize. Based on all Phase I and Phase II contracts derived from 1996-2005 solicitations. Commercialization data taken from January 2010 DoD SBIR Commercialization Database. DoD SBIR/STTR is highly competitive.

The Future of the SBIR/STTR Programs • The SBIR/STTR Reauthorization Act • Signed by President Obama on 31 December 2011 • PL 112-81 extends program to 2017 • Increase budget requirement to at least 2.6% of extramural RDT&E(FY2012) • Several changes are forthcoming via the SBA Directive PL 112-81 extends STTR program to 2017 • Increase budget requirement to at least 0.35% of extramural RDT&E(FY2012) • Several changes are forthcoming via the SBA Directive
